Why You Should Ditch Dryer Sheets

May 27, 2020 By Kyndra Holley

A pile of laundry in a light teal laundry basket sits against a white wall.

Who doesn't love the scent of fresh laundry? Dryer sheets will keep your laundry fresh, but they can be loaded with toxic chemicals, and they create unnecessary waste. Luckily, there's a safer, more sustainable option. Here's why you should ditch dryer sheets.

A pile of laundry in a light teal laundry basket sits against a white wall.

Are dryer sheets bad for your health?

While dryer sheets add a nice scent and a plush softness to your laundry, that pleasant aroma comes with a laundry list (pun intended) of toxic ingredients. These ingredients (outlined below) can have a very negative impact on your overall health and wellness. Many of them aren't even regulated by the FDA and come with a nasty list of potential side effects. Something as simple as a dryer sheet should not wreak havoc on your health.

Over the years, I've shared quite a bit about the toxic chemicals hiding in household cleaners, personal care products, and even makeup. I've also created several DIY recipes to show how to make your own safer products. Today I am going to give you some tips and tricks to help you clean up your laundry routine.

Along with perfume, candles, and air fresheners, dryer sheets are some of the most chemical-laden scented products on the market. Even the non-scented varieties are loaded up with toxic ingredients. The chemicals in dryer sheets are infused into the fabric of our laundry, and then transfer to the skin as we wear clothing, dry off with towels, snuggle up in blankets etc. All of this contact greatly increases our exposure to toxic chemicals; many of which are then absorbed into the bloodstream.

The skin is the largest organ in the body and much of it is covered in clothing around the clock. Why put your health in harms way when there are safer, cleaner options?

    Dangers of Dryer Sheets

While the ingredients in dryer sheets can change from brand to brand, here are some of the most common problematic ingredients:

    • Benzyl Acetate -- a fabric softener linked to pancreatic cancer.
    • Benzyl Alcohol -- another fabric softener, linked to respiratory issues.
    • Chloroform -- yes, chloroform, a known neurotoxin and carcinogen, used as a fabric softener.
    • Fragrance -- one of the most common ingredients in household cleaners, personal care products, and beauty products. While added fragrance provides a lovely aroma, it is highly problematic: on a scale of 1 to 10 of risk of exposure, 10 being the highest risk, the Environment Working Group rates fragrance at an 8. Fragrance is problematic because it can be made of any ingredients that give off a pleasant scent, and companies do not need to disclose what they use. Fragrance can cause respiratory issues, contact dermatitis, allergic reactions, and endocrine issues.
    • Dipalmethyl Hydroxyethylammoinum Methosulfate -- a softening and antistatic agent. The most infuriating part about this ingredient is that there is literally no public data available on its impact or its usage. Companies are allowed to do this, because the regulations are so lenient. While the companies label Dipalmethyl Hydroxyethylammoinum Methosulfate "generally regarded as safe," they are free to do their own tests, and not beholden to any industry standards.

    So what's the alternative?

Luckily, there are plenty of safer options for soft, fluffy laundry. Not only are these options better for your health, but they will save you a lot of money in the long run since they are reusable. The icing on the cake is that in ditching chemical laden dryer sheets, not only are you saving money, but you are also doing right by the environment. Here are some of my favorite safer alternatives to dryer sheets:

    • Wool Dryer Balls  - Wool dryer balls are a great option because they soften clothes without the chemicals, and they'll last for years and years. (get them here)
    • Aluminum Foil Ball - Worried about static? Use one of the oldest tricks in the books: throw a ball of aluminum foil in with your laundry before drying. The aluminum neutralizes the static, and aluminum foil balls can be reused to decrease waste.
    • Reusable Dryer Sheets - need a reusable, hypoallergenic, vegan option to replace your dryer sheets? Try a fabric option! Use the same way you'd use conventional dryer sheets, but they'll last for years to come. (get them here)

Safer fragrance options for that fresh laundry smell

If you are missing the fragrance from conventional dryer sheets, there's an easy fix for that as well. While you can make your own laundry detergent, there are also some chemical free, non-toxic versions you can buy. Thieves Laundry Soap is my favorite. You can add natural fragrance to wool dryer balls or reusable dryer sheets using essential oils. Here are some of my favorite scent combinations:

    • Stress Away and Lemon Myrtle
    • Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint
    • Citrus Fresh and Joy
    • Lemon and Basil
    • Purification and Orange
    • Bergamot
    • Grapefruit and Valor

Simply add a couple drops of essential oil on each dryer ball, transfer your laundry to the dryer and add 2 or 3 wool balls to the mix. You can reuse the same scented wool dryer balls 2 to 3 times before adding more oil. I add fresh oil each time I do laundry because I really enjoy smelling them on my clothes. Not only do they smell wonderful, but I get the added therapeutic benefits of aromatherapy.

You can use this same method with the reusable dryer sheets, and throw a ball of aluminum foil in to eliminate static naturally.

Hopefully now you have a good idea of why you should ditch dryer sheets, but also how easy and inexpensive it is to make the switch.

Why Bees Are Crucial to the Survival of the Human Race

April 29, 2020 By Kyndra Holley Leave a Comment

Why Bees Are Crucial to the Survival of the Human Race | Kyndra Holley

Why are bees important? This post covers why bees are crucial to the survival of the human race and what we can do to save them. They pollinate crops that we rely on for food, like fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Without bees, many animals would go without food, including humans!

Why Bees Are Crucial to the Survival of the Human Race | Kyndra Holley

What do bees do? Why are bees important?

Honey bees are nature's best pollinators. Workers collect pollen to feed their larvae, storing it in pollen baskets in their legs or on branched hairs on their body. As they go from flower to flower they inevitably lose some of the pollen they have collected. Some of this pollen may land on the female parts of other flowers of the same species, resulting in cross-pollination. Without this process, plants have to rely on wind to carry pollen, which isn't as effective. Without cross-pollination, plants can't reproduce.

If bees went extinct, there would be a huge decline in a lot of the crops that we depend on as food for humans and agriculture.

Here's a list of some of the crops that bees pollinate:

    • Fruits: apples, mangos, rambutan, kiwi fruit, plums, peaches, nectarines, guava, rose hips, pomegranates, pears, black and red currants, strawberries, prickly pear, apricots, avocados, passion fruit, custard apples, cherries, coffee, lychee, acerola, lemons, figs, limes, quince, persimmons, loquat, durian, cantaloupe, tangelos, watermelon, star apples, coconut, tangerines, boysenberries, starfruit, papaya, raspberries, elderberries, blackberries, tamarind, cocoa, vanilla, cranberries, tomatoes, grapes
    • Vegetables: alfalfa, okra, onions, lima beans, kidney beans, adzuki beans, green beans, celery, goa beans, fennel, carrots, cucumber, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, bokchoy (Chinese cabbage), turnips, congo beans, sword beans, chili peppers, red peppers, bell peppers, green peppers, eggplant, black eyed peas,
    • Nuts, seeds, and seasonings: cashews, allspice, walnut, flax, macadamia nuts, buckwheat, hazelnut, coriander, caraway, chestnut, brazil nuts, mustard seed, rapeseed, sesame
    • Other materials and plants: cotton, sunflower oil, palm oil, safflower, clover, orchid plants, cactus

Did you know you can replant and grow some of these fruits and vegetables at home? Fruits and vegetables grown in your home garden can support the bee population.

If honey bees disappear and we do not find replacements that can do the work they do, then foods that we take for granted will decrease in supply and increase in price. The pollination service provided by insect pollinators was €153 billion (euros) in 2005 for the main crops that feed the world. This figure amounted to 9.5% of the total value of the world agricultural food production.

Why are bees important to the ecosystem?

All elements of an ecosystem are important to the functioning of that ecosystem. The main reason that these fuzzy pollinators are important for our world is as simple as this: if the honey bee does not pollinate the crops, the crops do not grow and produce the food that gets harvested and brought to the store where we buy it and bring it home to feed ourselves and our families. In other words, there is a direct connection between the bees pollinating the crops and our ability to provide food for our families.

If you are looking for more ways to protect the ecosystem, check out 40 Ways to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint.

We are losing the bees that live naturally in the wild. We depend on these insects for our food, but in an ecosystem where pollution and urbanization are altering nature dramatically, we are all in major trouble.

    Impacts on the economy

As a result of the loss of wild bees, farmers in the United States have resorted to renting bee hives from commercial beekeepers for pollination. Indeed, this business has become so important that the beekeeper is often paid more money to haul his or her bees from flowering crop to flowering crop than they are for honey: up to $350 per hive per season. Multiply that by hundreds, even thousands of hives that are needed and that’s much more than a beekeeper can make selling honey.

Take the California almond industry, for example. In 2007, the California Almond Board stated that almonds are California’s number one horticultural export, occupying 550,000 acres of land. In 2006, this important revenue-generating crop required over one million beehives to support its yield, and the Board projects needing over two million hives by the year 2012!

Many of our food crops for both man and animals depend on bees for pollination. It is estimated that if the bee population was somehow reduced by at least 30 percent, more than half of the world’s food supply will be adversely affected. With droughts, earthquakes and other natural and manmade disasters befalling us nowadays, losing the bees is yet another challenge to our survival as the dominant species on Earth.  We may even go the way of the dinosaur and the dodo, no thanks to the elimination of our little striped helpers.

We should all be concerned after all; bees are essential not only for their honey and beeswax but, more importantly, for their roles in food production for humanity’s benefit.

Why are bees dying? Are bees going extinct?

There are quite a few threats to our striped friends.

    How pesticides kill bees

Pesticides are harming them by causing them to lose their way home, research suggests. Two studies provide strong evidence that pesticides sprayed on farmers’ fields, and used on private gardening threaten bumblebees and honey bees.

One team of British scientists showed bumblebee colony growth slowed after exposure to a chemical. Another group of French researchers tracked foraging honey bees and found that pesticide tripled their chances of dying away from the hive. But how do pesticides affect bees? One of the main chemicals found in a common pesticide is thought to disrupt the bees’ homing systems.

Bees feed on pollen and nectar produced by plants. When bees can't find their way back to the hive, they're unable to bring the nectar they've collected back to the hive. Without nectar, the other bees in the hive, including the pupae, larvae, and the queen bee, have nothing to eat.

    Insecticides cause Colony Collapse Disorder

Insecticides called neonicotinoids may also fuel Colony Collapse Disorder. The phenomenon, marked by the disappearance of honey bee colonies, is a problem in northern hemisphere countries. Professor Dave Goulson, from the University of Stirling, who led the British study, said: “Some bumblebee species have declined hugely. For example, in North America several bumblebee species, which used to be common, have more or less disappeared from the entire continent. In the UK, three species have gone extinct.”

They are losing their food sources

Rural and forested land is consistently being developed for housing and shopping malls, reducing the flower sources they feed on. In addition, bees can’t find nectar and pollen as easily as they used to because of weed sprays and “better” pasture care. The weeds, from which they gather much wildflower honey, simply aren’t there.

    Parasites are attacking bees

The varroa mite is an external parasite that plagues bees. It was first discovered in Indonesia in 1904 and was transported to the Americas by humans. It attaches itself to bees and sucks their blood, significantly reducing their life span. Commercial beekeepers developed a remedy for the mite, a miticide that keeps their hives alive and able to work. The miticide is, however, yet another poison bees come into contact with.

    How to save the bees

Just as much as bees have a role in ensuring the survival of humanity, we also have roles in ensuring their survival.  This way, we can ensure that the symbiotic relationship we have with bees will endure for many more generations.

Here are some ways that we can protect bees:

    • Stay away from harmful chemicals and pesticides
    • Plant trees, flowers, and vegetables. Maintain your garden!
    • Don't kill weeds and wildflowers during the early spring months. Bees depend on weeds and wildflowers for nectar as these plants are some of the earliest bloomers. You can also buy a pollinator wildflower mix to plant in your yard
    • Buy more organic, non-GMO produce. Use your dollars to support farms that use bee-friendly practices
    • Support beekeepers! Buy local honey and beeswax to make DIY soap recipes
    • Become a beekeeper

Ultimately, the greatest defense bees have is their biggest challenge: ignorant humans. Being an advocate for bees means you're an advocate for the entire ecosystem, and the best chance we have to resolve this issue is by spreading awareness. Make sure to share this post with friends and family!

    Orange Creamsicle Cocktail

April 27, 2020 By Kyndra Holley 1 Comment

This Orange Creamsicle Cocktail has all the delicious flavors of orange sherbet ice cream or an orange julius, but in a perfectly sippable low carb cocktail. Perfect for a hot summer day, or Sunday morning brunch.

A low carb orange creamsicle with an adult twist

This is not the Orange Creamsicle of your childhood! A creamy cocktail made with fresh orange juice, vanilla vodka, and slightly sweetened with keto-friendly powdered erythritol. This sugar free Orange Creamsicle Cocktail is bright, refreshing, and absolutely delicious. I can see myself sipping this low carb cocktail all summer long ... it's the perfect keto drink recipe!

Make a dairy free Orange Creamsicle Cocktail

This keto cocktail recipe so easy to customize. To make it dairy free, swap the heavy cream for almond or coconut milk. You can also omit the powdered erythritol if you think the orange juice is sweet enough on its own. I used vanilla vodka in this recipe but you can use unflavored vodka and add a splash of vanilla extract. The vanilla flavor really adds to the creamy element, and it compliments almond milk or coconut milk if you decide to go dairy free!

What cocktails are low carb? How to enjoy alcohol on keto:

If you're living a low carb lifestyle and you're wondering if you can have cocktails on keto, the answer is ... YES. The occasional cocktail is a great way to make sure that you're not feeling deprived on your low carb lifestyle. The key here is "lifestyle" -- if you want this to be a sustainable way of life, the key is finding low carb alternatives that make you feel satisfied. We'll all have moments where we want to celebrate, whether it's a milestone occasion or a Sunday morning brunch.

In addition to this Orange Creamsicle Cocktail recipe, check out some of my other favorite low carb cocktail recipes:

Use This, Not That: Beautycounter Sunscreen - a safer option

April 22, 2020 By Kyndra Holley

Beautycounter sunscreen lined up on a bathroom vanity: Countersun After Sun Cooling Gel, Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Mist SPF 30, Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30, and Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Stick SPF 30. Above the bathroom vanity is a mirror that reflects back a framed photo of a sloth.

Conventional sunblock is loaded with toxic chemicals and endocrine disruptors. Beautycounter Sunscreen is a safer option with the same level of protection.

Beautycounter sunscreen lined up on a bathroom vanity: Countersun After Sun Cooling Gel, Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Mist SPF 30, Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30, Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Stick SPF 30, and Dew Skin. Above the bathroom vanity is a mirror that reflects back a framed photo of a sloth.

Why I made the switch to Beautycounter Sunscreen

While this is technically a food blog, to me, it makes no sense to share healthy recipes without sharing all of the other factors that go into a healthy lifestyle.

The skin is the largest organ, with pores, and the ability to absorb up to 70% of products applied topically right into the bloodstream. I figured it’s pretty important to educate myself about the ingredients in the products I use regularly, especially sunscreen, which I use year round.

When I first started transitioning to a non-toxic, chemical free home with essential oils in 2014, I became acutely aware of the dangerous ingredients in some of my everyday products. I used the Environmental Working Group website to look up individual products and ingredients, and what health risks were associated with items I was using multiple times a day, on my skin, in my hair, and in my home.

Many of the ingredients in my makeup, skincare, personal care products, and household cleaners were associated with cancer, allergies/immunotoxicity, organ system toxicity, developmental and reproductive toxicity and much, much, more. I knew there had to be a better way ... a safer way.

After making DIY essential oil household cleaner swaps, I started replacing my beauty and skincare products. In 2016, I joined Beautycounter because their B-corp mission and ideals aligned with my personal values. I was impressed with the quality and efficacy of their safer products from the start, and the Beautycounter sunscreen and sun scare products quickly became some of my daily, holy grail products.

Text image: BEAUTY SHOULD BE GOOD FOR YOU with the text fading in ombre blue hues from light to dark.

    Why do we need sunscreen?

Sunlight exposure is essential for humans because sunlight helps our bodies make vitamin D, which helps us absorb calcium and phosphorus from our food. Vitamin D is called the “sunshine vitamin,” -- when the cholesterol in our skin cells is exposed to the sun's ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, the UVB rays provide the energy for our bodies to synthesize vitamin D.

40% of Americans don’t get enough vitamin D, and lowered levels are linked to osteoporosis (since the body can’t absorb adequate levels of calcium without vitamin D) as well as cancer, depression, and muscle weakness.

While you can get vitamin D from a few real food sources or with supplements, the best source is sunlight. About 13 minutes of sun exposure three times a week in the summer is all you need to get your healthy dose of vitamin D. The problem is when we go beyond that 13 minutes, the UVB rays can cause more harm than good. This is where sunscreen is helpful.

Protection from UVB rays is essential for safe exposure to sunlight. Too much exposure to UVB rays can lead to damage to the outer layer of the skin. Sunscreen is essential for reducing the risk for skin cancer, avoiding sunburn, and slowing down the aging process, and choosing the right SPF from a safer skincare sunscreen can make all the difference.

A hand holding a bottle of Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Spray in front of a pool with a large unicorn floaty in the background.

What is SPF and how does it actually work?

The active ingredients in sunscreen work to absorb and reflect UV rays. When we talk about sunscreen, it’s important to also talk about the SPF, or the sun protection factor of sunscreen.

According to skincancer.org, “The SPF of a sunblock tells you how long the sun’s UVB rays would take to redden your skin if you apply the sunscreen exactly as directed compared with the amount of time without sunscreen. So, if you use an SPF 30 product properly, it would take you 30 times longer to burn than if you used no sunscreen.”

So, if it takes you 10 minutes for your skin to redden in the sun without sunscreen, sunscreen with an SPF 30 will give you 300 minutes of protection, or about 5 hours. Skincancer.org recommends reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours to be safe.

    Who needs to wear sunscreen?

In short, everyone. It’s no secret that I’m a sunscreen fanatic -- I wear it year round and I advise everyone else to do the same. Your skin is damaged by sun exposure over your lifetime, whether or not you burn. Even people of color can get skin cancer.

Everyone should wear sunscreen -- SPF 15 at minimum for daily wear, SPF 30 for outdoor activity days. Reapply every 2 hours and get someone to help you so that you can be sure to cover the harder to reach areas.

Yes, sunscreen is for everyone. That being said, not all sunblock is safe.

A hand holding a bottle of Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Spray in front of a city landscape with a beautiful blue sky in the background.

    Beautycounter raises the bar

The major difference between Beautycounter sunscreen and other sunscreen brands is that Beautycounter sunscreens are made with safer ingredients. The United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938. Because companies aren’t beholden to strict legislation, they can formulate their products with a wide range of unsafe chemicals to cut costs.

Beautycounter’s mission is to get safer personal care products out into the market and advocate for stricter policy regarding the regulation of allowable ingredients. Until the legislation catches up with Beautycounter’s standards, they have created their own standard. The Never List™ is made up of more than 1,800 questionable or harmful chemicals that we never use as ingredients in Beautycounter products.

Unfortunately, other sunscreen companies do not adhere to the same standards.

A text image of Beautycounter's Never List displaying some of the ingredients that Beautycounter has committed to never using in any of their products.

    Common toxic sunscreen ingredients

Not only is Beautycounter sunscreen safer than conventional sunscreens, it’s free from 3 of the most toxic common sunscreen ingredients (all 3 found on The Never List™). Let’s take a look at these ingredients …

    • Oxybenzone: Sunscreen agent and ultraviolet light absorber linked to irritation, sensitization and allergies, and possible hormone disruption. Found in: sunscreen, moisturizer.
    • Retinyl palmitate (Vitamin A Palmitate): Retinyl palmitate is an ingredient composed of palmitic acid and retinol (Vitamin A). Data from an FDA study indicate that retinyl palmitate, when applied to the skin in the presence of sunlight, may result in adverse health consequences like lesions and photosensitization. FDA, Norwegian and German health agencies have raised a concern that daily skin application of vitamin A creams may contribute to excessive vitamin A intake for pregnant women and other populations.
    • Synthetic fragrance: An engineered scent that may contain any combination of 3,000-plus stock chemical ingredients, including hormone disruptors and allergens. Fragrance formulas are protected under federal law’s classification of trade secrets and therefore can remain undisclosed. Found in: all types of cosmetics.

Because all 3 of these ingredients are on The Never List™, you won’t find them in any Beautycounter products. Other personal care brands can’t say the same.

A bottle of Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Spray sits on a stone wall next to a cup of coffee and a pair of upside down reflective silver sunglasses. In the background is a crystal clear blue green pool.

    Beautycounter Sunscreen versus conventional brands

When comparing Beautycounter Sunscreen to other conventional sunscreen brands, Beautycounter wins hands down. Here’s how 3 different Beautycounter sunscreen products stack up to comparable sunscreen products from other brands.

    Beautycounter sunscreens are:

    • All natural, non-toxic, chemical free
    • UVA / UVB / and Blue Light blocking
    • Water resistant up to 40 minutes
    • Reef friendly
    • Hydrating and go on smooth without leaving a residue
    • SPF 30

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY SKINCARE PRODUCTS ARE SAFE?

Before trying a new product, I always run the ingredients through the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database. EWG rates each ingredient from 1 (low concern) to 10 (high concern). Not only does every product and ingredient receive a rating, but there’s also an explanation to tell you what concerns come with the rating. You can read more about EWG’s rating system and product standards here.

Let's do a comparison, shall we:

Up & Up Sport Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 30 (Target Brand)

    • SPF 30
    • Overall rating: 7 out of 10 (high hazard)
    • 3 ingredients with a rating over 4:

If you’re looking for a daily sunscreen for your face (which is more frequently exposed to sunlight) with a little more coverage, Beautycounter has two options:

    • Countersun Daily Sheer Defense for Face SPF 25 - this is a lightweight facial sunscreen. It goes on smooth, without leaving any residue or feeling greasy. It is meant to be applied on top of your daily moisturizer.
    • Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer - very light tinted moisturizer with SPF 20. It provides a light amount of coverage and feels you aren’t wearing anything at all. You can mix it with your daily moisturizer, your foundation, or you can wear it on its own.

Beautycounter also has an After Sun Cooling Gel to help calm and rehydrate skin after being in the sun and in the water.

After one application of Countersun After Sun Cooling Gel, 100% of consumers said skin felt*:

    • Soothed
    • Hydrated
    • Cool
    • Less irritated

10 Ways to Cut Down on Single Use Plastic

I've been on a mission to minimize my single use plastic, for the health of the planet, my family, and myself. Here are 10 ways to cut down on single use plastic.

A collage image of multiple products that help to cut down on single use plastic. Across the Image is a bright teal banner. In script, "10 Ways to Cut Back" and on a second line in bold text, "ONE SINGLE USE PLASTIC." To the right is a KH logo.

Why we should Cut Down on Single Use Plastic

If you have been reading my blog or following me on social media for any amount of time, then you have undoubtedly seen or heard me rambling on and on about all the simple ways you can cut down on single use plastic in your everyday life. Some of you might be thinking "But who cares?". Well, let me help shed some light on why this topic matters and why we all need to do our part for the overall benefit of the environment and the planet as a whole.

We truly live in a throw away culture - we throw everything away, without regard for where it will end up and the greater impact it will have. Hell, we even throw away people. But let's just stick to single use plastic for today.

You are walking down the street, chatting with a friend and sipping on your iced coffee... Then you happen to see a garbage can and you toss the empty plastic cup in the trash (hopefully you aren't the kind of savage that just tosses it on the ground. That is another post entirely), without ever giving it a second thought. But where does it end up? This plastic ends up clogging landfills and in our oceans, negatively impacting animals, humans, and the environment. Don't believe me? Try doing a google image search for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Plastic is not biodegradable and can take thousands of years to break down. In fact, plastic doesn't really even break down, it simply breaks up into microplastics. Microplastics are dangerous and come with some pretty severe toxicological health risks.

10 Ways to Cut Down on Single Use Plastic

So what can we do about it? Perhaps the easiest thing we can all do is to chip in and reduce our usage of single use plastic whenever and wherever possible. Not only is this a more sustainable approach and more eco-friendly, but it saves a lot of money in the long run. Why keep buying things that you are going to throw away, when you can buy something once and then use it over and over. Even if you don't care about the environment, it just makes good financial sense. Cutting down on single use plastic, will also cut down on your expenses... PERIOD.

In this post, I have compiled, by category, many of my favorite ways to reduce plastic in our home and in our everyday lives. If you have additional ideas, I would love to hear them. Go ahead and leave us a comment. Interested in how you can do even more? Be sure to check out my post on 40 Ways to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Collapsible Stainless Steel Straw with Carrying Case, Glass Straws with Cleaning Brush, Silicone Straws with Cleaning Brush, Reusable Bamboo Straws, Biodegradable Paper Straws

    1. Use stainless steel, silicone, bamboo, or glass straws

One of the easiest way to cut down on single use plastic is to stop using plastic straws. Reusable straws are a really easy way to cut out unnecessary plastic. Just toss them in your bag or in your glove box and then you will always have them with you. You can use them in hot or cold drinks, then rinse and reuse. I have a couple of collapsible stainless steel straws that Jon and I take everywhere with us. They are especially handy with all the traveling we do; they come in a small carrying case and the case even has a built in cleaning brush. SO HANDY!

These reusable straws are compact enough that you can even clip one to your keychain. If you’re not a fan of the stainless steel straws, you can also use glass straws, silicone straws, bamboo straws or even paper straws. I've linked to some of my favorite options for you below. While many restaurants, cafes and coffee shops are starting to get on board with the "no straw" message, there are far more that are still creating an abundance of plastic waste. Bring a straw with you and when you order a drink, be sure to ask for no straw.

    • Glass Straws with Cleaning Brush
    • Silicone Straws with Cleaning Brush
    • Reusable Bamboo Straws
    • Biodegradable Paper Straws

Stasher Bags and Zip Top Bags

    2. Swap disposable zip top bags for reusable silicone bags

I ditched all of our plastic sandwich bags and varying sizes of ziplock bags a few years ago. In the past, I was completely guilty of using an abundance of them and then throwing them away with no regard for the impact it was having on the environment and the plant as a whole. I was using far more than the average person because of what I do for a living, and I was creating so much unnecessary waste. Once I switched to reusable silicone zip top bags, I never looked back. I tried a few different brands before finding just the right one. Thankfully I tested them out so that you don't have to.

Stasher Bags and Zip Top Bags are hands down the highest quality brands on the market. They come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors and they are dishwasher safe, microwave safe and can even withstand boiling water or the heat of the oven up to 400°F. These resusable bags are free of  BPA, BPS, lead, latex, or phthalates, and they're even safe for raw meat storage and marinating, as they are non-porous, which inhibits bacterial growth. Best of all, you can toss them in the dishwasher for easy cleaning. We use them for everything - storing leftovers, traveling with snacks, marinating meats and vegetables, storing pantry items, in our hiking packs. I honestly can't say enough good things about them.

Ecowaare Mesh Produce Bags, Reusable Organic Cotton Produce Bags, Organic Cotton Muslin Produce Bags

    3. Switch to reusable produce bags

Lots of grocery stores have switched to biodegradable or compostable produce bags now, but even the more eco-friendly options can take decades to break down. Plus, it's just unnecessary waste. I keep a stash of reusable grocery bags and reusable produce bags in the back of my car at all times. I can just never tell when I may end up at the grocery store. It is one of my favorite places, after all. Reusable bags are great because you can use them in the grocery store, carry your produce home in them, and even use them for storage -- the material is cotton, so it’s very breathable. The vegetables in our refrigerator last way longer when we store them in the reusable produce bags - double bonus! To clean the bags, simply throw them in the wash between uses, the cotton varieties are even dryer-safe. Below are a few of my favorite options:

    • Ecowaare Mesh Produce Bags
    • Reusable Organic Cotton Produce Bags
    • Organic Cotton Muslin Produce Bags

Reusable Foldable Polyester Shopping Totes with Storage Pouches, Reusable Reinforced Bottom Foldable Totes, Reusable Canvas Grocery Bags

    4. Keep a stash of reusable grocery bags, and don’t forget them in the car!

Another really easy way to cut down on single use plastic is by bringing your own reusable grocery bags with you when shopping. This one is pretty common switch; you might already have a few reusable grocery bags stashed somewhere in your car or around your house. Some reusable grocery bags can be just as plastic heavy as traditional plastic bags, which is why I prefer fabric bags. I have a mix of heavy duty collapsible bags for heavier items like glass bottles and jars, and a bunch of fabric totes for all the lighter items. Jon and I both keep a stash in the back of our vehicles so that we always have them. But sometimes the trickiest part is just remembering to bring them into the store with you.

White wide mouth mason jar lids, 16 ounce wide mouth mason jars, 24 ounce wide mouth mason jars, 32 ounce wide mouth mason jars, 64 ounce wide mouth mason jars

    5. Shop in bulk and store items in glass Mason Jars

One of my favorite rooms in my house is my pantry, which may sound a bit strange. But if you’ve seen my pantry, you know it’s filled with all of my most commonly used dry ingredients, stored neatly in mason jars with pearly white lids. Yes, the white lids are plastic, but they are not single use plastic and they get used over and over. They don't rust, or put off that weird old metal smell like the traditional lids that come with the jars. Even better that they are one solid piece.

When you shop in bulk, bring your own reusable bags to purchase your dried goods, and then transfer them to the jars when you get home. That way you are not only skipping the plastic bag you would use to get it home from the grocery store, but you are also skipping any single use plastic packaging.  You also save money by buying in bulk. It's good for the environment and it helps stretch your grocery budget. Most bulk stores have scales, so you can bring your own storage items, tare the weight, and add the bulk items you’d like to purchase. Easy peasy. There are a lot of different ways you can label the jars, but I just write on the bottom with a sharpie so that the jars have a really clean and sleek look on the shelves. Below are the lids and various sizes of Ball jars that I use in my pantry.

    • White wide mouth mason jar lids
    • 16 ounce wide mouth mason jars
    • 24 ounce wide mouth mason jars
    • 32 ounce wide mouth mason jars
    • 64 ounce wide mouth mason jars

Silicone baking mat, 5 piece silicone bakeware set, Silicone muffin cups

    6. Use silicone bakeware and baking mats

For many of the same reasons I listed above with the reusable silicone bags, I have also switched to a lot of silicone cookware. Silicone baking mats and silicone bakeware are a great nonstick, nontoxic option. They help to cut down on things like aluminum foil, parchment paper, wax paper, muffin liners, cooking spray etc. While those may not be single use plastic items, they are still items that cause unnecessary waste. Not to mention, that not having to use those items will save you a lot of money in the long run. My first foray into silicone bakeware was the switch to silicone baking mats, not just because they’re reusable, but because they’re so easy to bake with. You don’t need to grease them -- they’re naturally nonstick (without the toxins), and they crisp everything up just like parchment paper. Rinse them off with warm soapy water between uses and dry with a dish towel or let them air dry.

    • Silicone muffin cups

18 piece Glasslock storage container set, Silicone stretch lid food and bowl covers, Silicone Lilypad Lids, Reusable beeswax food wraps

    7. Ditch the cling wrap and switch to a reusable option

To me, plastic wrap has always seemed wasteful. You can’t wash and reuse it, it gets all stuck to itself, and then it won’t stick to what you actually want it to stick to. Some great alternatives are Glasslock storage containers, silicone stretch lids, lily pad lids and beeswax food wrap. I think the Glasslock containers speak for themselves. We store everything in them. They are especially great for leftovers or food prep. The silicone stretch lids are a newer product and what makes them so unique is that they can stretch to fit a wide variety of bowl sizes, all while providing an airtight seal.

The lily pad lids are like some sort of wizardry. Not only can you use them to cover a bowl with an airtight seal, but you can also use them to cover pans on the stove while cooking. They will form such a tight seal, that you can actually pic the whole pan up by the lid. I actually prefer them to regular pan lids. Lastly, beeswax food wraps are another great option -- you can purchase pre-made sheets in different sizes and patterns. You can use beeswax paper like cling wrap, or with a little warm from rubbing your hands together, you can make it work like the press and seal wrap for an airtight seal. Using beeswax paper means that you’re supporting the bees, and saving the bees will help save us all.

Soda Stream glass carafes, Soda Stream Aqua Fix Sparkling Water Maker, Citrus essential oils

    8. Make your own sparkling water with a Soda Stream

This is one of my favorite ways to cut down on single use plastic waste. I love bubbles - sparkling water, champagne, kombucha, you name it - I am a sparkling kind of woman. Using a soda stream to make your own sparkling water at home cuts down on not only single use plastic, but also glass and aluminum (I know they are recyclable, but still) It also helped me kick my soda purchasing habit years ago. I used to buy case after case of Coke Zero, only to take a few sips and then waste the rest of the can. It took me a long time to realize that it was the carbonation I was craving and not necessarily the sweetness.

We bought a soda stream about 7 years ago and we never looked back. The only switch me made, was upgrading to a model that used glass carafes, instead of plastic bottles. Over time the plastic bottles made the water taste like plastic. I don't even want to know all the nasty things that were leaching out of those bottles and into my water. You can make the water as carbonated as you want and even add your own flavoring, either with a little bit of fruit juice, your favorite low carb water enhancer, or with citrus essential oils. My favorite flavors are grapefruit and citrus fresh (It is citrus with a hint of mint). The canisters of CO2 can be recycled or exchanged for full ones at many local grocery stores.

    • Soda Stream Aqua Fix Sparkling Water Maker
    • Flavor your water with citrus essential oils

Hydroflask insulated stainless steel water bottle, 18 ounce glass beverage bottles, Lifestraw water bottle with built in water filter, Berkey water filtration system, Yeti insulated travel coffee mug

    9. Give up bottled water and switch to reusable drinkware

Cutting out bottled water is one of the easiest ways to be more eco-friendly and cut down on single use plastic. I know plenty of people who like to go to Costco and get a huge palette of bottled water and run through it in no time flat. All those bottles add up really fast. Getting a reusable water bottle  not only cuts back on all that waste, but it might encourage you to drink more water. If you are buying water because you have poor tap water in your home and need filtered water, there are sustainable options for that. Lifestraw water bottles come with a built in water filter and it filters the water as you drink. You could also get a Berkey Home Water Filtration system and use it to filter your tap water. Then just fill up your reusable bottle and skip the plastic altogether. The same applies for plastic coffee cups. You know, from all those iced coffees we love to drink. Most coffee shops will make your drink in the cup you provide. Simply bring your own hot/cold coffee tumbler with you and get your daily coffee prepared right in your own mug.

Portable bamboo utensil set, Portable stainless steel flatware set, Portable wooden utensil set with carrying case

    10. Carry a set of reusable, portable utensils

Take out and fast food comes with a lot of waste, both paper and plastic. I like to keep a set of portable utensils with me, just in case. You can get them in stainless steel, bamboo, wood, or even in a super compact foldable set. Just wash them in between uses and put them back in your bag or car for a reusable utensil set on the go. These are also amazing for lunch at your desk, hiking, camping, or any other sort of outdoor adventures you might find yourself on. Plus, let's be honest, no one actually likes eating off plastic utensils anyway. Am I right?

How to Color Match Maskcara Makeup

March 17, 2020 By Kyndra Holley

Overhead shot of a flat lay of Maskcara Makeup products: a pink marble palette with 4 large tins of product, plus the 4 tin lids for each product below the palette; the package for a pink perfector sponge; and a double ended foundation brush, all sitting on a white background.

This guide will help you figure out how to color match Maskcara Makeup, to find your perfect highlight and contour colors based on your skin tone.

Overhead shot of a flat lay of Maskcara Makeup products: a white eyeshadow palette filled with warm tones; a large peach foundation palette filled with a row of highlight colors and a row of contour and lip and cheek colors; plus a double ended brush, a few foundation tins, and packaging.

    My experience before Maskcara makeup

Typically, I never wear full coverage makeup. I don’t enjoy looking cakey or like I’m wearing a mask - and honestly, it just seemed like too much effort. Not that I am lazy, but I like my face and I have relatively good skin, so why would I spend an hour trying to bake a cake on it? I opted instead to just stick with eye makeup. In fact, I didn’t wear any product on my face for more than 15 years - only eye makeup.

What I failed to realize until recently was just how much face products had changed over the last 15 years. Sometimes things just get memorialized in your mind how you last saw them. When I thought of foundation, I instantly thought of a bottle of Cover Girl and a crumbling, dirty wedge sponge. In fact, just typing that was enough for me to recall the smell of the foundation. Those were the days when your makeup stopped at your jawline and your face was a different color than your neck. Made worse, only by the fact that you would then cake on 15 layers of pressed powder from a compact, praying that you didn’t shatter the disc of powder or the mirror, every time you dropped it. Does this sound familiar? I feel like maybe I am recalling the makeup memories of an entire generation and not just my own.

Overhead shot of a flat lay of Maskcara Makeup products: a pink marble palette with 4 large tins of product, plus the 4 tin lids for each product below the palette; the package for a pink perfector sponge; and a double ended foundation brush, all sitting on a white background.

    How I found Maskcara Makeup

A few months ago, I started following several different Maskcara artists on Instagram and YouTube. I watched video after video of them applying Maskcara makeup -- they all made it look so easy and flawless, and the before and after photos certainly spoke for themselves. But even when I watch videos and things appear seemingly easy, I always wonder how many times they did it off camera so that it could look effortless on camera. Nonetheless, it was enough to make me want to give it a go for myself. Because if I could apply it, then anyone could. Now I'm the one making IGTV videos of myself applying it.

Another thing that is very important to me is that I always make a concerted effort to avoid brands that use endocrine disrupting ingredients, (not just for makeup, but for all products I use) which typically means the full glam stuff is automatically ruled out.

I got curious and looked up the ingredients in Maskcara’s IIID foundation and I was pleasantly surprised that nothing rated over a 4 on EWG’s Skin Deep database. It actually has very clean, simple ingredients. It is kind of amazing how few ingredients it has actually - liquid paraffin, Petrolatum, ozokerite wax, beeswax, acetyl esters, lanolin, zinc stearate, phenoxylethanol, iron oxides, titanium dioxide, ultramarines.

After watching a LOT of IGTV videos, I decided to go all in and order a Pro Artist Kit so that I could swatch all of the foundation singles and really get a feel for the products, the brushes, and the application process. The first time I did my makeup, it went on so smooth and blended super easily. My skin looked glowy and flawless, and my makeup lasted all day. Not only does Maskcara have great products, but they developed a technique that anyone can follow. I was immediately impressed.

An assortment of Maskcara Makeup products from the artist pro kit, including foundation tins, a perfector sponge, brushes, palettes, and more.

    What is Maskcara Makeup?

Maskcara is a makeup line created by Cara Killpack in 2013. Using cream foundations, highlights, contours, and blushes, Maskcara enhances skin tone, color corrects, camouflages blemishes and dark circles, sculpts features and creates the “perfect lighting” on your face all in one quick application. This is called HACing (highlight and contour).

Cream makeup is very forgiving and blendable, so it makes a great option for makeup beginners. The application method that you learn with Maskcara makeup is completely foolproof; trust me when I say if I can do it, you can do it! It is also an amazing value because a little goes a long way.

All of the Maskcara Beauty colors come in magnetic tins so that you can create your own custom palette, using only the colors you want and need - no waste. Gone are the days of reaching the bottom of the tin on some of your colors, while the others remain untouched.

How to color match Maskcara Makeup and What to consider before purchasing Maskcara Makeup

Before you start adding products to your cart, stopping to answer a few questions will ensure that you get the best possible match for the best possible look. I want you to be confident that you have the right colors in your cart before you check out. However, should you have any issue with the products once you receive them, you can return or exchange them for any reason within the first 60 days.

A landscape graphic with a light teal ombre background. In the center of the image is a rainbow color wheel. To the right, a breakdown of warm undertones; to the left, a breakdown of cool undertones; at the bottom, a breakdown of neutral undertones. At the top of the image, the text reads "Independent Maskcara Artist."

    Find your undertone

Your undertone is different from your skin tone, which we’ll get to in just a minute. Undertone refers to the shadows in your skin. There are a few easy ways to figure it out.

First, look at the veins on the inside of your wrists -- blue veins = cool undertone, green veins = warm undertone, blue-green veins = neutral undertone.

Next, you’ll think of what colors you gravitate towards in your wardrobe. If cool colors like blue and white look good on you, you have cool undertones. Alternatively, if you prefer warmer colors like oranges, reds, and cream, you have warm undertones. And finally, if you wear a little bit of everything, you have neutral undertones.

You can use the same strategy with jewelry -- if you typically select yellow gold jewelry, you have warm tones. Prefer white gold or platinum? You have cool tones.

    Assess your skin tone

After you figure out your undertone, it’s much easier to find the perfect color match for your skin tone. Skin tone is the overall color of your skin -- usually described as fair, light, medium, dark, or deep.

I think the easiest way to get a great color match is to take a makeup free selfie in front of a window with indirect light, then compare to someone with similar coloring. I put together a grid with a few examples below. Start building your custom palette - HERE.

A portrait orientation graphic with a light teal ombre fade. At the top of the image, the text reads "Independent Maskcara Artist." Within the image are 9 selfies of women with light skin tones and their respective color match.

Keep in mind that Maskcara makeup is meant to blend into the skin; you can wear a few shades lighter or darker than your skin tone and it will still blend effortlessly. This is why you may see a few selfies that look similar in skin tone, but have different bases and highlights listed. Start building your custom palette - HERE.

A portrait orientation graphic with a light teal ombre fade. At the top of the image, the text reads "Independent Maskcara Artist." Within the image are 9 selfies of women with medium skin tones and their respective color match.

The base color (main highlight color) should be close to your natural skin tone, and your brightening highlight color will be a bit lighter -- this is where knowing your undertone comes in handy. The brightening highlight is used for areas where you want to create the illusion of more light hitting your face to accentuate your features - under your eyes, the center of your forehead, and down the middle of your face. This Green Chile Chorizo and Chicken Mexican Casserole has it all

Whether you call it a casserole or a hotdish, this recipe has everything delicious. Cauliflower, green chilies, bell pepper, onion, and garlic, drizzled with olive oil and seasoned with a blend of Mexican spices, then roasted and topped with layers of tender chicken breast, flavorful pork chorizo, and shredded sharp cheddar cheese. This is one of those casseroles that you crave week after week: it's so flavorful and satisfying, and the leftovers just develop the flavors even further.

This recipe was born from a desperate need to go grocery shopping. That is when I am forced to be the most creative. I open the fridge and it is like I am looking at a Chopped basket of ingredients and have to figure out a way to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together. It was a huge hit in our household. It has ended up becoming a heavy hitter in our Taco Tuesday rotation.

    Serving suggestions

You could remix this meal in a variety of ways: serve for breakfast and top with a fried egg or throw leftovers into a scramble, use the casserole as a filling in a tortilla for chicken chorizo keto tacos or an enchilada bake, or enjoy on its own topped with sour cream and green onions! The possibilities are endless.

Roasted Rainbow Carrots with Cranberries and Pecans

December 28, 2019 By Kyndra Holley Leave a Comment

These Roasted Rainbow Carrots with Cranberries and Pecans feature a variety of colors, textures, and flavors, from savory to slightly sweet, plus pops of citrus and roasty caramelization.

Roasted Rainbow Carrots with Cranberries and Pecans, drizzled with a orange coconut yogurt, sprinkled with fresh herbs, on a white round plate with a fabric napkin to the left. The napkin has decorative script writing.

These Roasted Rainbow Carrots with Cranberries and Pecans make a super festive vegan side dish

If you’re wanting to get a head start on stockpiling your healthy holiday recipes, bookmark this one now. With rich savory flavors, a pop of sweetness from sugar free dried cranberries, toasty roasted pecans, and a citrusy zing from orange extract, this isn’t just a great holiday recipe … it’s a spring, summer, fall and winter recipe.

This recipe also checks a lot of boxes - it is lower in carbs, dairy free, sugar free, vegetarian, vegan, and it is even Whole30 compliant if you leave off the cranberries. If you want to make the cranberries paleo, you can simply substitute coconut sugar in place of the erythritol.

While carrots are in season in the spring and the fall, you can make this recipe year round. The balance of flavors and textures is so satisfying. This is one of those dishes that takes minimal effort, but the outcome looks so beautiful.

How many carbs are in carrots?

TThese Roasted Rainbow Carrots with Cranberries and Pecans come in at 10.2g total carbs per serving, or 7.2g net carbs. You could easily work a serving into a keto diet, or eat a few servings in one sitting if you’re looking for more of a carb up experience.

Carrots are delicious, but roasted carrots just take things to the next level. Plus, the vitamins, minerals, and fiber you’ll find in carrots makes them a great option if you’re craving a starchy vegetable.

If you’re really intimidated by the carb count, just swap carrots for radishes or turnips. When roasted, either option has a pretty spot on potato flavor, resulting in a keto side dish that fulfills a potato craving. You could also leave off the cranberries and pecans to help reduce the carb count. Lastly, you could try this recipe with roasted cauliflower. Keto cauliflower recipes are taking over the world, and for good reason -- cauliflower can do anything!

DIY - How to Make Your Own Reed Diffuser

December 11, 2019 By Kyndra Holley 1 Comment

DIY Reed Diffuser - How to Make Your Own Reed Diffuser

How to Make Your Own Reed Diffuser naturally, without all the toxic synthetic chemicals and fragrances.

Years ago I ditched chemical air fresheners, plug-ins and candles. We made the switch to flameless candles, and freshening the air in our home by diffusing all natural, therapeutic grade essential oils.

Why essential oils? Why make your own natural home air fresheners? Dousing yourself in perfume, using car air fresheners, plug-ins, candles, room refreshing sprays and home deodorizers expose you to all of the health risks of synthetic, chemical based fragrances. Not to mention the exposure that comes from the use of personal care products – shampoo, lotion, deodorant, skincare, makeup, and even home cleaners. In their commercial forms, they all contain fragrances. Looking to clean up your skincare and makeup and swap them out for safer products, I highly recommend Beautycounter.

What's wrong with "fragrance" in personal care products?

There’s a dirty little secret that the fragrance industry would rather you not know about. Hidden behind these pleasant scents are typically synthetic chemicals like parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and many others, linked to hormone and endocrine disruption, reproductive problems, allergies and even cancer.

Since the exact ingredients in synthetic fragrances are protected as “trade secrets” they are not required to be disclosed on the ingredients label. Therefore, you really never know what you are getting. Many of these ingredient could quite literally be described as poison, and yet we knowingly (or unknowingly) subject ourselves to the exposure on a daily basis.

Why not skip all of the toxic chemicals and synthetics and DIY your way into an all-natural, chemical free fragrance. Not only will it have an alluring aroma, but you can take comfort in knowing exactly what you are putting on your body and what you are filling your home with.

    Date Night on a Budget

December 1, 2019 By Kyndra Holley Leave a Comment

Date night on a budget.  Date nights don't have to expensive or extravagant. Dating on a budget isn't hard, you just need to be flexible and creative. Don't limit yourself to specific days and times. Create new experiences and memories without breaking the bank. Check out these great ideas for budget-friendly dates.

Date Night on a Budget | Healthy Living in body and Mind

    Date night on a budget:

    1. Be a tourist in your own town

Spend the day exploring your home town from a new perspective. Go places you have never been, sites you have never seen, or revisit places you haven't been in a long time.

    2. Dinner and a movie at home

Instead of paying the absurd prices for a movie and dinner out, stay in. Try a new recipe and cook it together. There are so many ways to watch a movie - Redbox, Netflix and even Amazon. You can even make your own healthy snacks, that won't cost a fortune.

    3. Try something new

What is something you have always wanted to do but haven't? Rock climb, DIY projects, pottery class, painting, play a sport, whatever it is, do it together.

    4. Educational Date

Check out a museum, cultural center or even a science center. These can be really fun, low cost and you might even learn a thing or two. A lot of museums and cultural centers often have traveling exhibits that might only be in your area once in a lifetime.

    5. Give back

Use your time together to give back. Volunteer at a homeless shelter, go for a walk and pick up litter, or my personal favorite - help out your local dog shelter. Who knows, maybe you'll come home with a new furry friend. Giving back can be rewarding on many levels and you get to give back while hanging out together.

    6. Karaoke at a dive bar

Check out your local dive bar and sing some karaoke. It will only cost you the price of the drinks. Pick funny songs or ones that are special and sentimental to you.

    7. DIY Spa day

Light some candles, put on some face masks and set up DIY foot spas. This may only sound fun for girls, but I assure you men will also appreciate the pampering.

    8. Just be kids

Check out an arcade and play video games all day. Go roller skating like you did when you were a kid. Even better, spend the day at the park.

    9.  Look at the stars

You could visit a planetarium, but I think spreading out a blanket in the backyard and staring up at the stars might be just a little more romantic. You may be surprised how memorable some quiet time together under the peace and tranquility of the stars can be.

    10. Game night date night

Have a potluck with some friends and have a night full of laughs and friendship. After all, laughter really is the best medicine.

    11. Go for a ride

Get those bikes out of the garage and explore. If you don't have a bike, most bike shops have day rental available. You get to spend time together and get a little exercise too. Win/win!

    12. See a play

While going to the theater in the city can be expensive, local community theaters and high schools have wonderful productions and are significantly less expensive.

    13. Putt Putt Golf

A little friendly competition on a date can be a lot of fun. Mini golf is typically inexpensive and is a lot of fun. It's one of those perfect first date things to do.

    14. Open Mic Night

Restaurants, bars, and coffee shops often have open mic nights. They can be bands, singers, poets, or even comedians. These types of events are typically free, you will only be out the cost of the food or beverage. Inexpensive and always entertaining.

    15. Take a class

Most community colleges and community centers offer one time or short commitment classes of all kinds. Cooking classes, yoga, art, etc. Whatever it is, you will learn something and be together.

    16. Go Swimming

High school and community pools often have open swim time, several days a week. Swim, do cannon balls off the diving board, and afterwards you can relax with a nice soak in the hot tub, or some time in the sauna.

    17. Bingo Night

Check out your local churches or community centers for bingo night. Often times there is a donation for a charity to play and you can win prizes. It's fun and gives back.

    18. Go for a walk

Go for a nice long walk together. Explore a trail or even walk through your own neighborhood. Walking is known to bring out wonderful conversation. Take your pup and explore new dog parks.

    19. Go to the beach

Whether it warm or cold, is there anything better than hearing the sounds of the ocean? Go for the afternoon and swim, build castles or play frisbee on the beach. After the sun goes down grab a blanket and build a fire.

    2. Go for a hike

Hiking can be an amazing adventure with that special someone. Explore the great outdoors and the wonders of nature. Depending on the weather you could even try a snowshoe experience.

Ultimately date night is about you and that special person in your life. Put the electronics away, be creative and make amazing memories, while enjoying date night on a budget.

    20+ Keto Thanksgiving Recipes

November 5, 2019 By Kyndra Holley

20+ Keto Thanksgiving Recipes | Kyndra Holley

Looking for low carb Thanksgiving recipes? I've got you covered with 20+ Keto Thanksgiving recipes, from appetizers to entrees, plus sides, desserts, and cocktails.

20+ Keto Thanksgiving Recipes | Kyndra Holley

If you're looking for Keto Thanksgiving recipes, you've hit the jackpot. I'm sharing all of the traditional favorites, with a keto twist, from keto appetizers to entrees, low carb side dishes, and sugar free desserts, I've got everything you need to host a low carb Thanksgiving that everyone will gobble up.

    Keto Thanksgiving Appetizer Recipes

Nothing sets the tone of a Thanksgiving feast like the perfect appetizer. For this Keto Thanksgiving collection, I wanted to feature two dishes that are super festive and totally delicious. Let's get to it!

    Baked Brie with Cranberry Sauce
    get the recipe here

As far as low carb holiday recipes go, this is a must: melty, creamy brie, topped with tangy and slightly sweet sugar free cranberry sauce and pecans, garnished with fresh herbs. It’s so delicious and so festive, whether you’re looking for keto Christmas recipes, keto Thanksgiving recipes, or just a low carb appetizer to make at your next get together.

I can see this being the perfect centerpiece to a holiday keto charcuterie board, served alongside some keto crackers, prosciutto, and pickled red onions.

Keto Sausage Balls with barbecue and ranch dipping sauces

    Keto Sausage Balls
    get the recipe here

I can’t think of a more traditional appetizer recipe than sausage balls. They have grazed countless holiday tables for decades. These keto sausage balls are the perfect low carb rendition of a high carb classic. In this recipe I used almond flour in place of the traditional Bisquick used in the sausage ball recipes of old. It makes the perfect substitution, while keeping the perfectly dense, juicy texture.

    Keto Thanksgiving Entree Recipes

Everyone knows that Thanksgiving is all about the turkey. An herby, buttery, perfectly roasted turkey is the Thanksgiving gift that keeps on giving. Want to switch things up a bit? There's also a sugar free glazed ham and a buttery roast chicken, so everyone can have a little bit of what they love (and seconds, and leftovers).

Herbed Butter Roasted Turkey | Peace Love and Low Carb

    Herbed Butter Roasted Turkey
    get the recipe

Herbed butter made with thyme, sage, garlic powder, dried onion, salt, and pepper, slathered on a turkey and under the skin. The butter melts into the meat as the turkey cooks and the result is a rich, buttery flavor highlighted by herbs, with a tender juiciness throughout the bird and a beautiful brown skin on the outside. The juices are used to make a pan gravy, perfect for topping cauliflower mashed potatoes and any other keto Thanksgiving recipes you make this year.

Keto Glazed Ham | Peace Love and Low Carb

    Sugar Free Keto Glazed Ham
    get the recipe here

A sugar glaze doesn’t exactly sound keto friendly, but when you make it with brown sugar erythritol or golden monk fruit sweetener and just a little bit of molasses, it’s completely possible (and totally delicious).

Herbed Butter Roasted Chicken | Peace Love and Low Carb

    Herbed Butter Roasted Chicken
    get the recipe here

This herbed butter roasted chicken is the juiciest chicken you will ever sink your teeth into. Packing the butter and seasoning between the breasts and the skin locks in the flavor and keeps the chicken moist all throughout the cooking.

    Keto Thanksgiving Side Dish Recipes

For me, Thanksgiving is about the SIDES. Buttery, cheesy, mashed "potatoes," green bean casserole, white cheddar sausage biscuits, cranberry "rice" pilaf, loaded baked cauliflower casserole, chive horseradish keto cauliflower mash (yes, THREE "potato" options!), roasted butternut squash with sage, and of course homemade sugar free cranberry sauce. Think of all the flavor combinations and colors you could fit on one plate!

Keto Herbed Goat Cheese Cauliflower Mash

    Herbed Goat Cheese Cauliflower Mash
    get the recipe here

It is really hard to make a pile of mash look pretty, but trust me when I tell you that this is seriously delicious. This recipe doesn’t need a low carb gravy or any other kind of sauce -- it's amazing straight out of the bowl. This keto herbed goat cheese cauliflower mash is one of my very favorite low carb side recipes. It pairs well with just about anything, but two of my favorite dishes to pair it with are my Keto Dijon Parmesan Crusted Pork Chops or my Pan Seared Chicken with Balsamic Cream Sauce, Mushrooms and Onions.

Low Carb Green Bean Casserole | Peace Love and Low Carb

    Low Carb Green Bean Casserole
    get the recipe here

The days of making a green bean casserole entirely out of canned and packaged ingredients are long over. Once you try this low carb green bean casserole recipe, I promise you won’t be buying canned cream of mushroom soup anytime soon. This is a great holiday classic but also a delicious year-round side dish.

Keto White Cheddar Sausage Breakfast Biscuits | Peace Love and Low Carb

    White Sausage and Cheddar Biscuits
    get the recipe here

White Cheddar, Sausage Breakfast Biscuits – low carb, gluten free, and kid and husband approved. Sound too good to be true? Oh, it’s the truth my friend. They taste just like the real deal.

Cranberry Pecan Cauliflower Rice Low Carb Stuffing | Peace Love and Low Carb

    Cranberry Pecan Cauliflower Rice Stuffing
    get the recipe here

One of the hardest traditional Thanksgiving recipes to recreate is a low carb stuffing recipe. While this isn’t traditional in the sense that it is made with bread, it still has all of those wonderful flavors of a perfectly prepared Thanksgiving spread. When it comes to the the holiday table, the turkey is always the star of the show, carefully plated on decorative platters and set in the center of the table. But for me, it is the side dishes that get piled high on my plate. This Cranberry Pecan Cauliflower Rice Low Carb Stuffing has quickly become one of our favorite Thanksgiving side dishes.

Low Carb Loaded Baked Cauliflower Casserole | Peace Love and Low Carb

    Loaded Baked Cauliflower Casserole
    get the recipe here

This Low Carb Loaded Cauliflower Casserole is the perfect low carb side dish recipe to pair with just about any type of protein. It is even good all on its own. If you are missing a loaded baked potato or even twice baked potatoes, then this Low Carb Loaded Cauliflower Casserole is the dish for you!

Roasted Butternut Squash with Sage | Peace Love and Low Carb

    Roasted Butternut Squash with Sage

A perfectly seasoned, buttery, delicious, paleo squash recipe. While foods that are lower in carbs are beneficial in maintaining ketosis, you can work some higher carb foods into a keto diet, especially when they’re grain free, sugar free, and sourced from real food ingredients. This recipe is a great way to enjoy seasonal veggies, and it looks beautiful on a Thanksgiving table.

Sugar Free Cranberry Sauce | Peace Love and Low Carb

    Sugar Free Cranberry Sauce

If you’re planning out all of your low carb Thanksgiving side dishes, but you can’t think of a keto swap for the traditional canned shaped cranberry sauce, I’ve got great news for you. Not only is this homemade cranberry sauce a sugar free version of the old favorite, but it’s way more flavorful, bursting with festive holiday colors, and the perfect addition to your keto holiday meal planning.

Chive Horseradish Keto Cauliflower Mash | Peace Love and Low Carb

    Chive Horseradish Keto Cauliflower Mash
    get the recipe here

This Chive Horseradish Keto Cauliflower mash is one of my all-time favorite low carb side dishes. Even after living a low carb lifestyle for so long, I still miss potatoes almost daily ... especially around the holidays. Mashed potatoes are hard to replicate because they are just so perfect as they are, but I feel like this recipe does a pretty good job of curbing even the strongest potato craving. Plus it's got a killer kick from the horseradish. You just have to try it to understand.

    Keto Dessert Recipes

There's always room for dessert, and with these keto Thanksgiving dessert recipes, you can end on a high note and completely avoid the sugar crash. We've got the traditional keto Thanksgiving pies (pumpkin AND pecan), plus some of my favorite ways to incorporate the most memorable flavors of the season.

It’s just like the real thing, only better because there’s no sugar crash. Make this for your keto Thanksgiving spread, your keto Christmas party, or your keto second Tuesday of the month gathering. This is one of those recipes that everyone will rave about.

Keto Pumpkin Pie | Peace Love and Low Carb

This keto pumpkin pie starts with a buttery almond flour crust. The filling is creamy, perfectly pumpkin spiced, and lightly sweetened for the best end to an amazing keto Thanksgiving feast. This recipe is proof that gluten and sugar free desserts don’t have to be boring. There’s even a dairy free option, so everyone on your guest list can give thanks and enjoy. The best part? You don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to gobble it down.

This low carb pumpkin cheesecake mousse recipe has all the flavors of a low carb pumpkin pie, but with a deliciously creamy, whipped texture. It is sure to become a fall favorite. The store bought stuff just can’t compare to fresh ground ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon.

    Keto Thanksgiving Cocktail Recipes

Of course, you'll need a few beverages for extra cheer. Whether your guests prefer merry and bright pops of fresh cranberry, or something a bit more indulgent like a Keto Irish Cream or sugar free buttered rum, there's a mug of holiday cheer for all.

I hope that you enjoy it as much as we have.

Baked brie is the perfect sweet and savory option, whether you serve it as an appetizer or a sugar free holiday dessert. Here are a few more options if you want to switch up the flavor pairings -- you could even serve this baked brie 2 ways as part of your keto charcuterie spread!

    • Swap the cranberries for blueberries and add a little vanilla extract to the sauce, then top with slivered almonds
    • Use orange zest in the cranberry sauce instead of lemon zest, then add a bit of grated ginger into the mix to really amp up the festive flavors
    • Make the sugar free sauce with blackberries and just a little black pepper -- trust me on this flavor pairing, it’s delicious!

Isn't baked brie made with puff pastry?

Traditional brie en croute (or brie in pastry crust) is brie wrapped in puff pastry, usually topped with jam and nuts. But baked brie can also just be brie ... baked.

If you’re really wanting to take this baked brie recipe to the next level and make a keto brie en croute, just wrap it in a sweet fathead dough. Bake until it’s golden brown, then top with the keto cranberry sauce and nuts and serve immediately. When you slice into the buttery fathead dough, creamy brie should come flowing out. It’s basically a keto dream.

Strawberry Lemonade Cupcakes - sugar free, gluten free

gluten free cupcakes arranged on a cake stand

Not only are these Keto Strawberry Lemonade Cupcakes gluten free and sugar free, but they are also insanely delicious. They have all the fresh, bright flavors of spring.

The best gluten free cupcakes you will ever eat

Quite possibly the best keto cupcakes ever made… with a taste to match! These Low Carb Strawberry Lemonade Cupcakes are moist, fluffy and super delicious. Plus there’s a treat waiting for you when you bite into the middle of these almond flour cupcakes: a yummy whole roasted strawberry!

low carb strawberry lemonade cupcake with strawberry frosting on a white plate with a bite taken out of it

Can you sub coconut flour for almond flour in these gluten free cupcakes?

Like many of my other keto dessert recipes, this recipe uses a blend of almond flour and coconut flour. Mixing two different types of gluten free flour creates a nice texture and mouthfeel, and playing with the ratios could result in a cake that is too coarse and crumbly.

If you decide to go with only coconut flour, you’ll also have to increase the liquids in the recipe because coconut flour is more absorbent than almond flour. My best advice is to make this recipe as written.

Looking for an easy cupcake recipe, you came to the right place!

This Keto Strawberry Lemonade Cupcake recipe comes together so quickly, and it’s the perfect option if you’re looking for birthday cupcakes that’ll please a crowd. Not only is this recipe gluten free, but it’s also a diabetic friendly dessert that doesn’t compromise on flavor.

The strawberry cupcakes and low carb frosting are both sweetened with Swerve granular erythritol. When it comes to keto dessert recipes, Swerve is my favorite because they have three options: granular, confectioner, and brown sugar. All of Swerve’s keto friendly sweeteners are a 1:1 swap for the regular full sugar version.

    Recipe tips and variations

    • For a festive fall option, substitute orange extract and sugar free dried cranberries for the strawberries and lemon extract
    • Substitute blueberries or raspberries for strawberries, or do a mixed berry option
    • Change up the frosting with another berry, and mix and match the berries you use in the cupcake versus what you put in the frosting (blueberry cupcakes with strawberry buttercream frosting)

    Keto Pecan Pie

October 9, 2019 By Kyndra Holley

overhead shot of a whole sugar free pecan pie

A holiday classic with a healthy makeover - This keto pecan pie is sugar free and gluten free all while still having the deliciously warm and inviting flavors of the original.

The best sugar free pecan pie recipe

If you’re searching for the perfect keto pie recipe to bring to the low carb holiday party, this is it. A gluten free pie crust, filled to the brim with buttery, vanilla-y, salty yet maple-y sweet spiced pecan filling with the perfect amount of gooey crunch. It’s just like the real thing, only better because there’s no sugar crash. Make this for your keto Thanksgiving spread, your keto Christmas party, or your keto second Tuesday of the month gathering. This is one of those recipes that everyone will rave about.

How to Make Keto Pecan Pie

This is not your average sugar free pie. To sweeten the base, you can use brown sugar erythritol or golden monk fruit sweetener -- I like either of these options because they add a nice brown sugar sweetness without the digestive upset that can come from other sugar free sweeteners made with maltitol or sucralose. There’s also a bit of sugar free maple syrup in the filling -- Lakanto is my favorite brand, and I use it just like regular maple syrup.

Once you try out the filling for this keto pecan pie, you may be tempted to experiment -- why not try whipping up a batch of keto pecan pie bars? Or even a pecan pie cheesecake? Let me know what variations you come up with in the comments below.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make the gluten free pie crust ahead of time?

You sure can. Make the keto pie crust as directed, bake, then store it unrefrigerated for a day, or in the fridge for a few days.

The best part of this keto pie crust recipe is that you can use it for all different keto dessert recipes. If you’re not a fan of almond flour, there are plenty of other sugar free pecan pie crust options -- you could even do a pecan/almond blend. Just get some extra pecans and grind them up as fine as you can, to match the almond flour consistency. The pecan flour is a perfect swap for almond flour, as long as you can grind it up as fine as almond flour.

As far as coconut flour pie crusts go, that’s definitely an option, but you’ll have to adjust your wet ingredients because coconut flour is much more absorbent. I haven’t personally tried it, because I’m not a fan of coconut, and this gluten free pie crust recipe works great for me.

Can you make the filling of this low dairy free pecan pie ahead of time?

Although this is a dairy free keto dessert, it’s not egg free. For that reason, I suggest you do not make the filling ahead.

What you can do instead is make the whole pie ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to a week. You could also freeze it -- just be sure to use plastic wrap or foil to prevent freezer burn. You’ll also need to thaw this keto pecan pie in the fridge overnight, at least 24 hours before you plan to serve it.

Health Benefits of Red Light Therapy

July 19, 2019 By Kyndra Holley

Woman standing in front of a Joovv Elite Red Light Therapy Unit

What are the health benefits of red light therapy? How does red light therapy work? What is the difference between near infrared light and far infrared light?

Red Light Therapy Unit - Joovv Go

Woman standing in front of a Joovv Elite Red Light Therapy Unit

    What is red light therapy?

Before I tell you about all the benefits of red light therapy and all the improvements I have seen in my own health and wellness, let me back up and start by telling you what red light therapy even is. You've probably seen me and a whole host of other people you follow, standing in front of our red lights, illuminated by the red glow, but what's it all for? Is it the latest trend among bloggers and influencers? Or is there actual science behind it? Red light therapy has been tested and studied across hundreds of peer reviewed clinical studies.

Click here to learn more about Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy, or photobiomodulation, delivers red low-level wavelengths of light to your body. Red light therapy has been used to help alleviate a variety of symptoms and promote overall health. People are using it for a multitude of different reasons - to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, help with skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, acne, etc. But the benefits go so far beyond just skin issues. Light therapy can literally enhance all aspects of health and wellness. I will get into more of the benefits below. But first, let's talk about the different types of red light and how each one is different.

Joovv Elite Red light Therapy Unit , lit up in a garage gym

What is the difference between near infrared light and far infrared light?

Different parts of the body respond to different wavelengths of light. The longer the wavelength, the deeper the wavelength can penetrate different cells within the body. There are different types of red light, and depending on the wavelength of the light, it falls under either far infrared or near infrared.

Red wavelengths range between 630-700 nm and are visible to the human eye on the electromagnetic scale. This range is perfect for assisting with surface issues on the skin.

Near infrared (NIR) wavelengths go a bit further, falling between 700 and 1200 nm and are not visible to the human eye on the electromagnetic scale. This range goes beneath the skin to assist with healing, cellular regeneration, and pain relief.

Using a form of red light therapy that combines both far and near infrared wavelengths helps promote the full range of red light therapy benefits. The more surface area of your body you can cover, the more your cells absorb natural light to reap the benefits of red light therapy.

    Benefits of Red Light Therapy

Now let's talk about some of the benefits of red light therapy beyond just surface level skin issues and aging. It really works -- just type in “before and after red light therapy”,  “red light therapy reviews” or "red light therapy testimonials" into google and you’ll see hundreds of stories and images from real people who found health and healing with the incorporation of red light therapy into their routine.

Some of the health benefits of red light therapy include:

    • Supports healthy skin and anti-aging efforts
    • Promotes fat loss
    • Assists with muscle recovery
    • Boosts mood and helps reduce stress
    • Promotes hair growth
    • Helps with S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder)
    • Promotes testosterone production in men
    • Promotes hormone balance in women
    • Alleviates joint pain and stiffness
    • Diminishes fine lines and wrinkles
    • Supports sleep optimization
    • Helps prevent recurring cold sores
    • Promotes wound healing
    • Helps fade old scars and stretch marks
    • Assists in brain health, cognitive function, memory, and learning
    • Repairs sun damage
    • Oxygenation of tissues
    • Increases circulation
    • Promotes relaxation

    • Speeds recovery from training and in turn increases physical performance
    • Helps regulate Circadian Rhythm

Perhaps one of the most important benefits of red light therapy is that it helps reduce stress. You can do everything right, but if your body is in a heightened state of stress, and cortisol levels are constantly increased, pursuing optimal health will always be a challenge. Stress wrecks havoc on every system in the body and can actually be the root cause of many of the symptoms listed above. You don't always feel or realize the stressors that are impacting your overall health and wellness. Stress can be a silent killer.

But what about blue light? Is blue light bad for you?

If you’re spending a lot of time in front of a screen, either phone or computer, you are being exposed to a lot of blue light.

Blue light coexists with red light naturally in sunlight. Our bodies evolved to use the two together to metabolize the positive effects of both wavelengths. We need blue light (in conjunction with red light) to function properly. Blue light helps us feel awake, and helps regulate a lot of hormonal functions within the body.

Blue light becomes problematic when it occurs in isolation, without red light, and this happens a lot in the modern world. Our circadian rhythm gets all confused, that’s why you may have a hard time falling asleep after scrolling through your Instagram feed on your phone, or watching a movie in bed.

Think about how many of us are glued to our phones throughout the day. We rely on technology for so much: navigation, research, communication, entertainment … technology is a necessity. But it is also something we, as a modern society have grown to have an unhealthy relationship with. I’m not going to demonize all technology, but the constant pressure to be connected and stay updated and plugged in 100% of our waking hours has us all stressed. I would also argue that this amount of online connectivity has brought about a true disconnect in society. We’re not getting good sleep, we’re overwhelmed, and we’re doing a huge disservice to our health as a society.

As someone who works from my computer and phone for most of the day, I have firsthand experience with just how disruptive blue light exposure can be. While I've taken measures to reduce my blue light exposure with blue blockers and apps, nothing I've done in the past has been as beneficial as red light therapy.

Click here to read more about how red light therapy helps combat the negative effects of blue light.

Thousands of years ago, our bodies were naturally synced to function optimally during daylight hours. We woke up early, went to bed early, and had great sleep hygiene. We didn’t fall asleep with the TV blaring, or have blue light seeping in through our blinds from streetlights. We didn’t have to rely on sleep aids to regulate our sleep schedules, because they were already regulated.

Chances are, if you’ve struggled with sleep in the past, you may have tried supplementing with melatonin. While I’m all for natural options, supplementing with melatonin can disrupt your body’s natural processes. This is why red light therapy is so helpful: red and near infrared photons of natural light can help to increase melatonin production naturally.

Rebalancing red and blue light exposure with red light therapy naturally de-stresses our bodies in many ways. Stress can be really hard to manage. Red light therapy can help promote relaxation and healing within the body, and it only takes 10 minutes a day to feel the benefits.

    Does Red Light Therapy Work?

So now that I have told you what red light therapy is and shared with you some of the amazing health benefits of red light therapy,  let me tell you more about my personal experience with it. Here are some of the biggest changes I've noticed since starting regular red light therapy.

While using Joovv is a new addition to my health and wellness routine, Red light therapy isn't new to me. I have been regularly using red light therapy for the last 4 years. We also have a far infrared, full body heated mat with jade and tourmaline stones. We have been using it for years and it was my first introduction into the healing world of red light therapy. It was where my research on the topic began. After hearing about Joovv, I was completely ready to jump in because I was already well versed in the benefits. I loved the idea of being able to incorporate this type of treatment in other ways, and also being able to take it with me when we travel by using the Joovv Go

    Reduction in inflammation and swelling

I am prone to a lot of inflammation and swelling in my ankles and hands. This is something that I have suffered from for a long time. Sometimes it would look like I didn't even have ankles at all. It was especially bad when I traveled. I tried everything I could think of to combat it - essential oils, turmeric, rebounding, dry brushing, yoga, exercise, lymphatic massage, etc. Some things worked better than others, but no one thing provided the relief I was ultimately seeking. Then I started using the Joovv Go twice a day for targeted treatment on my ankles and within a couple of weeks it was a night and day difference. I was able to see my ankles again. Even after 18 flights in 36 days during my book tour, my ankles still never swelled up. If that didn't make me a believer, I don't know what would.

    Better blood circulation

I have had circulation issues in my left leg for years. I have venous insufficiency (the valves in the veins of my leg allow blood to travel backwards instead of upwards towards my heart) and with that has come a lot of numbness, tingling, feeling like my leg is dead, and the swelling and inflammation I mentioned above. Since starting daily red light therapy treatments, not only has the swelling and inflammation improved, but I have not felt any numbness or tingling in my legs. In fact, it feels as though these were never issues at all.

More even skin tone and complexion

My skin has never looked better. I feel like I am aging backwards. The overall tone and complexion of my skin has improved greatly and I have even noticed that some of the older scars I had from teenage acne are barely visible at all anymore.

Much calmer, less stressed and more focused

When I start my morning with a red light session, I feel much calmer, less stressed and more focused throughout the day. In fact, I've started taking my coffee with me and turning on my mediation app while I do my red light therapy and it has become the best morning routine ever. I even do yoga in front of my Joovv Elite from time to time.

Frequently Asked Questions about Red Light Therapy

How do you use it and how long does it take?

The best part of red light therapy is that all you need is 10 minutes max a day.

If you’re new to using red light therapy and you’re focusing on detox (hormonal, environmental, or otherwise) you’ll want to start small. 1 to 2 minutes a day on each treatment area, or 1 to 2 minutes a day total if you have a full body panel. Slowly build up from there, adding a minute each day until you work up to a full 10 minutes.

If you have an area that you’d really like to focus on, like a sore joint or any inflammation, you could go up to 15 minutes a day. More time is not more beneficial, because your cells can only absorb so much red light in one sitting.

Position yourself 4 to 6 inches away from your device and just sit still. I like to do a minute meditation or focus on my breathing. It’s best to use your red light device at least 5 times a week; I’ve seen the best results when I use my Joovv daily. Just make sure that you go at least 6 hours between each use so that your cells have time to absorb the red light between sessions.

Can you still get the benefits with clothes on?

Less clothing means more surface area, however, you don’t have to be naked for red light therapy to work. If I’m targeting a specific area, like my ankles, I’ll make sure to remove my socks and lift my pant leg.

For regular daily use, I just sit on my yoga mat in my leggings, most often with a sleeveless shirt. Jon usually does his sessions shirtless. Again, less clothing = more surface area so your body can better absorb the light.

Do you have to wear protective eyewear?

The short answer: no, you don’t have to use protective eyewear. However, there’s no benefit of staring directly into LED lights, and that could cause strain.

If you have glasses or contacts, you can remove them for treatments so that your eyes can get the benefits of red light therapy. If you’ve had LASIK, it’s best to consult with your healthcare provider; they may suggest protection.

If you’re just starting out or can’t get comfortable and the red light seems too bright, you can absolutely close your eyes during treatment.

Can you get the same benefits from one of the smaller units as you can the larger modular units?

This completely depends on your reasons behind using red light therapy. A bigger surface area means more light exposure. More exposure allows your body to better absorb red light.

Modular units are best for targeted therapy and for travel. You can also use a larger unit to focus on a specific area depending on how you position yourself in front of your unit.

If you’re just starting out, you can start small. Joov devices are great because you can purchase individual units over time and piece them together based on your needs.

How long does it take to notice a difference?

It depends on why you’re using red light therapy, what you’re looking for in terms of benefits, and your personal health. It also depends on what device you’re using.

For inflammation and joint pain, you can likely see relief within 2 to 3 days of targeted red light therapy. Other benefits depend on your body, but for the most part, daily red light therapy benefits should be obvious within 2-3 months of continuous use.

Is there such thing as too much red light therapy?

While too much exposure won’t necessarily harm you, it’s not going to benefit you. Your cells can only absorb so much light at one time. In order to give your body the opportunity to benefit from red light therapy, you only need to use your Joov device for 10 to 15 minutes max per day. Wait at least 6 hours between each session to give your cells the chance to absorb the light.

Staycation Fun on Pet Friendly San Juan Island

April 20, 2019 By Kyndra Holley

Washington state friends - If you are looking for a pet-friendly vacation spot in your own back yard, the San Juan Islands should be at the top of your list. Enjoy a staycation that truly feels like a vacation.

Where are the San Juan Islands?

There is a pretty good chance that you may have heard of the San Juan Islands and thought that it was some exotic and tropical far off place. But did you know that it is actually a not-so hidden gem that we are lucky enough to call ours right here in Washington state? While there are more than 170 named islands in San Juan county, there are four that can be accessed by the Washington state ferry systems - San Juan Island (Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor are here), Lopez Island, Shaw Island and Orcas Island.

How to you get to the San Juan Islands?

There are a few different ways you can get there, but we opted to drive and then ride over on the ferry. From where we live, it is about a 3 hour drive to the ferry terminal in Anacortes. For there were boarded the ferry in our vehicle and enjoyed the sights on the hour and a half ride over to San Juan Island. The pups aren't allowed to be in the upper decks without kennels, so we just stayed in the car with them. This was best anyway because Chewy gets pretty nervous in the car and leaving him alone wouldn't have felt right.

What makes San Juan Island Special?

Listing what doesn't make it special would be far easier. San Juan Island is refreshingly unique in a lot of ways. Here are a few key points to showcase what life on the island is like.

Preservation and Conservation:  When it comes to land conservation and preservation efforts, they are definitely ahead of the curve. You will find a lot of protected and undeveloped land on the island. It makes for beautifully scenic drives, synchronicity between humans, flora, and fauna and a feeling of connection with our planet.

Environmentally Friendly: This is another area where San Juan Island feels light years ahead of the rest of the nation. There are recycling receptacles next to every garbage can and all of the restaurants use paper straws,

Focus on Community and Self-Reliance: Everything on the island is locally sourced whenever possible. The restaurants are serving food that comes from the farms right on the island. Even the dinnerware on the restaurant tables are locally made. Many of them are made my local potters on the island. I wish this model of community and self-reliance was the norm and not the exception. Not only would it be better for the environment, but it would also support local small businesses instead of supporting giant chains.

No chains: If you are looking for a Mcdonalds or a Starbucks, you won't find them here. There isn't a single chain business on the island. It was incredibly refreshing to see.

No stop lights: The driving routes on the island are very streamlined. You can drive for miles and miles, admiring the beautiful landscape, wildlife and sweeping views of the water. But what you won't encounter are any stop lights. Like not even one. I can't even tell you how amazing it feels to get out of the hustle and bustle of rush hour traffic, angry drivers and traffic jams.

Whale Watching: This is one of the best places in the entire world to get shore-based views of the Orcas during whale season. While there are several whale watching boat tours that you can take, you can also see a lot of action right from the shoreline.

Where to stay on San Juan Island:

We stayed at the Island Inn for this trip. They are a pet-friendly hotel right on front street in Friday Harbor. Not only is it the perfect location to be able to walk to just about everything, but the views from the upper balconies are incredible. They upgraded our room from one of their pet-friendly suites to one of their penthouses. The rooms are truly amazing. It was like having our own private condo. But before I tell you about the place itself, I want to take a minute to gush about how they treated our furbabies.

When places say that they are pet-friendly, there is always some question about what exactly that means. For example, the hotel we stayed in the night before in Anacortes was technically pet-friendly, but all it really meant was that we were allowed to have them in the building if we paid a fee. We paid an extra $50 to have them there overnight and we couldn't even leave the room because we had to stay with them and there was no where else besides the guest room that they were allowed. So while we were able to bring them, I wouldn't exactly call that a pet-friendly experience. Island Inn on the other hand, catered to our pups like the VIPs they are. They truly went above and beyond.

When we entered our room, the first thing that I noticed were the preferred puppy pass stations that they set up for the dogs. Chewy and Prin were so spoiled that they each had their own - complete with beds, blankets, bowls, waste bags, lint rollers and locally made artisan dog treats. The human bed could have been a pile of boulders and they still would have won me over with how they accommodated the pups.

pet friendly hotel in San Juan Island

But Island Inn doesn't just spoil dogs, they spoil their human guests as well. In addition to a welcome package for the pups, there was a fruit bowl set out for us each day, along with locally made granola, chocolates, and coffee. But I think my favorite part of the accommodations is the kitchen. I am guessing that doesn't surprise many of you give the fact that my own kitchen is my happy place. But it isn't often that you travel and walk into your accommodations to see a Subzero refrigerator in your unit. What can I say, while others might be dazzled by thread counts, I am impressed by appliances.

We stayed in Penthouse 7 (my second favorite number, next to 11) a one bedroom, two bathroom unit. It had a full kitchen, fireplace, washer and dryer and was so comfortable that we almost didn't want to leave to explore - almost. Outside of the appliances, the first thing I noticed is how environmentally friendly they are. There were notices everywhere about recycling and reducing waste and water usage. They even had wool dryer balls for the laundry. We were really pleased to see this and wish more places would take this approach.

Penthouse 7 - Island Inn- Friday Harbor - San Juan Island

What is the weather like in the San Juan Islands?

While Seattle is the butt of every rain joke ever told, it is a lot nicer here than you might imagine. I always tell people that the rain is a lie we locals tell people to keep them from moving here. But in all honestly, it doesn't rain nearly as much as people think it does. We definitely have our share of gray days, but we don't get nearly as much rain as people believe we do. If so much as one drop of rain falls at SeaTac International airport, it is considered a day of rain. In fact, over the last 5 years or so our weather has changed so much that I told Jon that I wouldn't be surprised it palm trees started sprouting up around Mt. Rainier. I'm kidding obviously, but it has definitely been a lot dryer in recent years. But the weather in Seattle isn't what we are even here to talk about. While the San Juan islands are technically a part of Washington State, they are in a rain shadow known as the "Banana Belt" and they get 300 days of sunshine per year. A banana belt is not a term referring to fruit, it is any segment of a larger geographic region that enjoys warmer weather conditions than the region as a whole, especially in the wintertime. This makes it the perfect staycation destination for those wet, gray PNW days. While we were enjoying the sunshine on the island, it was much cooler and drizzly at home.

    Pet Friendly San Juan Islands

It wasn't just the Island Inn that was pet-friendly. There were dogs everywhere you looked and many of the restaurants even had bowls of water out or places where you could dine with your pup. Any place that loves dogs as much as I do is my kind of place.

Best Restaurants on San Juan Island

Here's the thing about keeping it Keto while traveling... it isn't so much about the restaurants you choose as it is about the decisions you make once you get there. With the right questions and substitutions, you can eat keto just about anywhere. That being said, we found a lot of keto-friendly options in the restaurants here with little to no modifications required. We didn't have a bad meal the entire time we were here. All of the restaurants use locally sourced, quality ingredients and have very reasonable price points. Nearly everywhere we ate, we commented on how we could have the same meal in Seattle and it would likely be half the portion and twice the price. Superior value!

Cask and Schooner Restaurant in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island

    Cask and Schooner

Cask and Schooner is located right on the corner on Front Street. It is one of the first places you see after getting off the ferry. It also happened to be right next to our hotel - Island Inn. This was one of our favorite meals on the island. It was so much more than we expected. We had the impression that it would be a simple bar food menu, but were so happy to be wrong. It The steamed clams were the best I have ever had. The broth was incredibly flavorful and could have been a wonderful soup all in its own right. I also got the crab risotto. Risotto is always a special treat for me and any time I see it on the menu, I have to order it. It is worth it every time. I would visit San Juan again just to eat here, it was that good.

    Downriggers

Downriggers was the first place we went when we got off the ferry. We dropped our bags, got the pups settled in and headed across the street to grab lunch. Everything is so walkable in that area. We started with the Roasted Cauliflower. It was tossed in buffalo sauce and was served with pickled red onions (which I think we all know how much I love) and then drizzled with ranch dressing. It was so simple, but so good. You can definitely expect to see a version of this with my own spin on it here on the blog soon. I got the Seafood Cobb Salad - fresh Dungeness crab, whole shrimp, romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, gorgonzola cheese, avocado, bacon, green onion, ranch dressing. OUT OF THIS WORLD! Hands down the best Cobb salad I have ever had. Historically when I have ordered seafood salads in the past, I am always disappointed in the amount to seafood and it never seems like a good value. This was definitely not the case here. They were more than generation with the portions. Jon got the Chilled Flank Steak Salad - napa cabbage, peanuts, cilantro, tomato, pickled red onion, lime, ginger. Start to finish, this was an amazing meal.

    Duck Soup

This was our favorite dining experience in terms of overall ambiance. When you first pull up to the restaurant you feel as though you are arriving at a private home and not a restaurant. It is quite literally a little cottage in the woods - tucked back from the road and surrounded by trees and beautiful ponds. Duck Soup is a farm to table restaurant with an inspiring and innovative menu. They use local produce, meat, seafood and foraged edibles. I don't have a lot of pictures from our meal here as it was dimly lit in the restaurant and we were just enjoying ourselves so much that we really wanted to be present in the moment. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and about food as a whole. We could tell that they really wanted their guests to feel like they were right at home and taken care of.

    Friday Harbor House

Friday Harbor House was a quick walk across the parking lot from our hotel. It was a beautiful deck with views of the entire harbor. They use all locally sourced ingredients and have an ever-changed menu. You could dine here frequently and have a completely different experience each time. I got the Woodstone Halibut  - roasted halibut, burnt citrus oil, yuzu beurre blanc, celeriac, sautéed chanterelle and Jon got the Ribeye Cap Steak - slow-roasted sweet onion, umami bomb butter, forbidden rice, grilled mushroom. We finished our meal off with their house-made donuts and bananas foster. The desserts were out of this world good. We don't splurge on dessert often, and these desserts were really worth it.

    San Juan Islands Sculpture Park

The sculpture park is a lot of fun. You could get lost there for hours, exploring all 20 acres. It is beautifully landscaped and has lots of little trails and offshoots. You can choose your own adventure and make your own route through the park. There are more than 100 sculptures throughout the park and many of them are made by local Pacific Northwest artists. The park gets more than 30,000 visitors annually and is really something to behold. While entry to the park itself does not cost anything, a $5 donation per person is requested.

    Explore Friday Harbor

We loved just being able to leave our hotel and explore with the pups. There are so many little local shops, coffee shops, restaurants etc. all within walking distance. The weather was beautiful so we just set out without a plan and walked until the pups were tired. We took them out on the dock while we trying to get a glimpse of Popeye, the famous resident harbor seal of Friday Harbor. While we didn't get to meet Popeye, we did see several other harbor seals swimming around the boats.

    Lime Kiln Point State Park

Lime Kiln Point is a 42 acre state park on the shores of San Juan Island. There are places for barbecuing and picnicking, as well as hiking. The lighthouse in the park was built in the early 1900's and is still in use today, providing a navigational beacon for ships in the Haro Strait.

With just a short walk into woods, you can visit the old lime kilns. First you will come upon the one that has been preserved and restored. But if you continue a little farther back you can see one of the older original lime kilns. They were put into use in the late 1800s and continued operations until the 1920's. For more than 60 years, San Juan county was the principle lime production area for the whole state of Washington. Large quantities of limestone were available right along the shoreline. The limestone is heated in the limekilns at high temperatures to convert it to quicklime. The quicklime was then used for building and construction materials.

But perhaps the most remarkable thing about this park is that it is one of the best places in the world to whale watch. Lime Kiln Point State Park is nicknamed "Whale Watch Park". Right from the shoreline from spring through fall you can see the local orca pod and transient orcas breaching.

    Roche Harbor

We were enable to enjoy Roche Harbor almost all to ourselves. Since we were not there during peak travel season, we were able to enjoy everything crowd free. It made for a really relaxing and peaceful trip. The harbor was packed with huge yachts, and yet it still felt like we had the place all to ourselves. We just walked around and explore the shops and took in all the views.

Afterglow Vista - John S Mcmillin Memorial Mausoleum

Afterglow Vista is formally know as the Mcmillin Mausoleum. I first heard about in the Lore Podcast. If you have a chance to visit here, I recommend listening to the podcast on the way up. It just so happened to be the exact length of our drive over from Friday Harbor. We finished listening and then with eager eyes and hearts made our way through the woods to the mausoleum. John Mcmillin owned lime works in Washington, was a mason, and a devout Methodist. He constructed this mausoleum to house the remains of his entire family. Inside this open air rotunda is a huge limestone table with chairs. Not only do the chairs represent the members of his family, but they also hold their ashes and serve as headstones. It was meant to represent the family dinner table. There is one chair missing and it is said to represent the loss of their son as he went off on his own, leaving the Methodist church behind. Maybe people have reported strange sighting or odd, unexplainable sensations when visiting the mausoleum.
