32 Low Carb AIP Recipes | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

WHAT IS AUTOIMMUNE PALEO OR AIP DIET?

The Autoimmune Protocol is a diet that helps heal the immune system and gut mucosa. It is applicable to any inflammatory disease.

We have a problem in this country with how we eat, treat disease and heal disease. AIP addresses inflammation in the gut that causes Autoimmune Disease. Autoimmune disease is a condition where the body cannot tell the difference between healthy tissue and foreign invaders and a hypersensitive reaction occurs. The body starts self-tissue attack. For months or perhaps years, this self-tissue attack can occur silently until full blown autoimmune disease develops. There are more than 80 types of "official" autoimmune disorders (and MANY more being discovered daily) but all autoimmune disease have in common is tissue self-attacking in places like the thyroid gland, brain tissue or salivary glands, to name a few.

The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet works to reduce inflammation in the intestines. Many elimination diets are not complete enough and often do not remove immune triggers that promote inflammation in the gut. AIP works to calm inflammation in the gut and also calm inflammation in the body. And while autoimmune disease can never be cured, it can be put into remission. The AIP diet is geared toward healing the intestinal mucosa and supporting low inflammation in the body that can temper the fires of an autoimmune flare-up. First I would like to say that this is our interpretation. Continue reading...

    33 Whole30 Breakfast Recipes

33 Whole30 Approved Breakfast Recipes | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

33 Whole30 Breakfast Recipes that are easy to make and will help you stay on track with your healthy eating!

33 Whole30 Approved Breakfast Recipes | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

Are you ready to embark on your first Whole30? Need some whole30 breakfast recipes for inspiration? If you answered yes, then you have come to the right place. This post is designed to set you up for success. When unprepared, taking on the challenge of completing the Whole30 program can prove to be... well... challenging. Chances are, if you landed on this post you have already been researching it and are ready to take the plunge. For many, breakfast is the hardest meal to come up with when changing their eating plan. This round up of Whole30 breakfast recipes will take all of the guess work out of it for you.

I have successfully completed 3 rounds of the Whole30 program. I won't lie. It is hard. There are days when you are so fixed on the idea of eating something that you can't have, that it is literally all you can think about. Then there are other days when you wonder why you don't just eat like this for life. As long as you stay prepared for success, those days in the latter category will win over. Perhaps the most notable thing I felt during our time spent on Whole30 was how optimally my body was running. My sleep was better. My skin looked better. My elimination processes were more more regular and consistent. My energy levels were through the roof. My workouts were better. My mood was better and I even dropped weight. Listing all of those amazing changes makes me wonder why we would every eat any other way. I absolutely recommend picking up some or all of the Whole30 books below. They truly will give you a better understanding of food and the program as a whole.

Check out these other amazing low carb Whole30 recipes and Whole30 round ups:

    • Roasted Rainbow Carrots with Cranberries and Pecans
    • Brussels Sprouts, Sweet Potato, and Bacon Hash – Paleo, Whole30
    • Low Carb Whole30 Side Dish Recipes

Whether you’re brand new to the program or returning after a long break, this track will take you from contemplation to action in just eight easy steps. Take as much time as you need to explore each step before moving on to the next, but we encourage you to review each step in order—even if you’re impatient to get started. As you’ll hear over and over again, when it comes to the Whole30, planning and preparation are key!

    Step Six: Plan For Success

    Step Seven: Toss That Scale

We’re serious about this rule. If you’ve been a slave to that little number on the scale, you’ll probably be tempted to peek during your 30 days. Toss the scale now and find your way to food freedom! Learn more…

No need to spend a ton of money on a costume you will only wear for a few hours. Make your own Halloween costume and save money.  25 DIY Halloween Costumes For Kids and Adults25 DIY Halloween Costumes for Kids and Adults

Every September the Halloween super stores start popping up in abandoned old grocery stores everywhere. You go in, cruise the aisles in search of the perfect costume, and if you are anything like me, you still leave empty handed. I am always on the hunt for cheap Halloween costumes. Even online, Halloween costumes are expensive. I can never justify spending that much money on something I will only wear for a few short hours. And often times, the Halloween costumes aren't even quality made. I remember buying Sloth and Chunk Goonies Halloween Costumes and while they were hilarious and looked great, they were both torn by the end of the evening.

Making your own Halloween costumes will save you a ton of money and it is fun. There is a good chance you already have everything you need laying around your house to make a fun and creative Halloween costume.

15 Ways to Repurpose Halloween Candy

October 6, 2017 By Kyndra Holley Leave a Comment

Trick or treating can be fun for adults and kids alike, but no-one needs that much candy. Here are 15 Ways to Repurpose Halloween Candy

15 Ways to Repurpose Halloween Candy | Healthy Living in Body and Mind.

Trick or treating is fun for adults and children. Seeing the excitement on the faces of little kids when they go through their loot is magical. But as a parent, the idea of having that much candy in the house can almost be anxiety inducing as you think of the sugar highs and then subsequent crashes. There are numerous ways to repurpose Halloween candy. Here are 15 great ways to do something fun and creative with all that candy.

    1. Donate It to Troops Over Seas

Programs like Soldiers Angels and Operation Gratitude are just two of the many programs that are designed to send care packages to the troops. This also helps teach children to be involved in giving back.

    2. Care Packages for Nursing Homes

Sadly, many elderly people in nursing homes don't have family or friends to visit them. Help your children make crafts and gift packages using the candy and deliver them to local nursing homes.

    3. Make it a Reward

Use the leftover Halloween candy as an incentive for completing chores without being asked or for a job well done of homework. It rations out the candy and helps to teach responsibility at the same time.

    4. Gift it

Candy bouquets are a popular gift for children and adults. With a  quick trip to the craft store, the perfect candy bouquets and gift boxes can easily be made and add a personal touch.

Read More: 15 DIY-Gift in a Jar Ideas

    5. Take it to Work

Fellow co-workers will love a candy bowl and all the candy will be out of the house and out of reach.

    6. Party Favors

Have a birthday party or family gathering coming up? Make homemade gift bags or fill a pinata with the candy

    7.  Take it Your Family Thanksgiving Get Together

Instead of bringing a salad to Thanksgiving dinner, bring a candy bowl. Candy will be a much bigger hit than any salad or side dish.

15 Ways to Repurpose Halloween Candy | Healthy Living in Body and Mind.

    8. Christmas Decorations

Leftover Halloween candy can be used to decorate Christmas cookies and other desserts. Using the candy to decorate gingerbread houses is a great way to make the houses look unique and special. So much better than what you might find at the store. Making a homemade DIY advent calendar can also be a fun family craft project.

    9. Make it a Learning Tool

The candy can be very helpful with younger children in learning to count,  as well as other math exercises.

Read More: Top 10 Educational Websites for Children

    10.  Arts and Crafts

Leftover candy can add a decorative splash to gift boxes. It can also be great for making pictures and sculptures. With some construction paper and a little glue, the possibilities are endless.

    11. Sweeten Your Coffee

Adding different types of chocolates to hot coffee or espresso is a fun and inexpensive way to get a flavored mocha at home.

    12. Infuse Your Own Alcohol

Soaking the different candy and chocolates into a bottle of alcohol can make for some delicious cocktails. Chocolate martini's anyone?

    13. Throw a Wine and Chocolate Party

Wine and chocolate alone are wonderful, combining the two is a match made in heaven. With a little research on pairing the various types of chocolate with different wines, the perfect adults only party will be easy to plan.

    14. Make Your Own Trail Mix

Trail mix is a fan favorite. Take the candy add some mixed nuts and dried fruit and easily the homemade trail mix can be created.

    15. Take it to the Kitchen

The leftover candy works great in recipes. Homemade ice cream toppings, milkshakes and maybe even making a copycat blizzard without having to go to the ice cream shop. Melt the chocolate into pudding or cakes and even adding some chopped up candy to take your usual chocolate chip cookies up a notch.

    16 Bone Broth Recipes

September 13, 2017 By Kyndra Holley 3 Comments

Bone broth has become a an excellent support of immune health. Bone broth contains healing ingredients like collagen, glycine, glutamine and proline. Improving gut health is also linked to bone broth.

The Healing Influence of Broth on Your Gut

In later years, medical scientists have discovered that your health is in large part dependent on the health of your intestinal tract. Many of our modern diseases appear to be rooted in an unbalanced mix of microorganisms in your digestive system, courtesy of an inappropriate and unbalanced diet that is too high in sugars and too low in healthful fats and beneficial bacteria.

Bone broth is excellent for "healing and sealing" your gut, to use Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride term. Dr. Campbell's GAPS Nutritional Protocol, described in her book, Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS), centers around the concept of "healing and sealing" your gut through your diet.

Broth or "stock" plays an important role as it's easily digestible, helps heal the lining of your gut, and contains valuable nutrients. Abnormalities in your immune system are a common outcome of GAPS, and such immune abnormalities can then allow for the development of virtually any degenerative disease...

The Healing Benefits of Bone Broth

As the featured article states, there are many reasons for incorporating good-old-fashioned bone broth into your diet. The following health benefits attest to its status as "good medicine."

Helps heal and seal your gut, and promotes healthy digestion: The gelatin found in bone broth is a hydrophilic colloid. It attracts and holds liquids, including digestive juices, thereby supporting proper digestion Inhibits infection caused by cold and flu viruses, etc.: A study4 published over a decade ago found that chicken soup indeed has medicinal qualities, significantly mitigating infection

Reduces joint pain and inflammation, courtesy of chondroitin sulphates, glucosamine, and other compounds extracted from the boiled down cartilage

Fights inflammation: Amino acids such as glycine, proline, and arginine all have anti-inflammatory effects. Arginine, for example, has been found to be particularly beneficial for the treatment of sepsis5 (whole-body inflammation).

Promotes strong, healthy bones: As mentioned above, bone broth contains high amounts of calcium, magnesium, and other nutrients that play an important role in healthy bone formation Promotes healthy hair and nail growth, thanks to the gelatin in the broth

Making your own bone broth is extremely cost effective, as you can make use of left over carcass bones that would otherwise be thrown away. And while the thought of making your own broth may seem intimidating at first, it's actually quite easy. It can also save you money by reducing your need for dietary supplements. As mentioned above, bone broth provides you with a variety of important nutrients—such as calcium, magnesium, chondroitin, glucosamine, and arginine—that you may otherwise be spending a good deal of money on in the form of supplements.

Check out some of my other favorite DIY recipes:

    • DIY Toilet Bowl Cleaner
    • DIY Dishwasher Detergent
    • DIY All Natural Toothpaste Recipe
    • DIY Foaming Hand Soap

    A couple tips:

    • If you do not have the proper set up for a double boiler, you can place a large mason jar in a pan of water over medium heat.
    • If you live in a warmer climate, it may need to be kept in the fridge. Under 75° should be fine.

    What You Will Need:

    • ½ cup shea butter
    • ¼ cup coconut oil
    • ¼ cup sweet almond oil
    • 2 vitamin E capsules
    • 15-20 drops lavender essential oil (I use this brand)

    What You Will Do:

    1. Combine shea butter, coconut oil, sweet almond oil and vitamin e in a double boiler.
    2. Stir continuously over medium heat until all of the ingredients are melted and well combined.
    3. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly. Mix in Lavender essential oil.
    4. Transfer the mixture to the fridge and allow time to set. About an hour.
    5. Using a hand mixer, whip for 10 minutes until light and fluffy.
    6. Return to the fridge for an additional 10-15 minutes to set.
    7. Store it in a glass jar with a lid. I like to use a half pint mason jar.

NOTE - Some awesome holiday combinations would be:
    -Christmas Spirit
    -StressAway and Peppermint
    -Cinnamon Bark, Clove and Nutmeg
    -Citrus Fresh and Cinnamon

111 Things to Throw Away to Cut Down on Clutter

December 18, 2016 By Kyndra Holley 1 Comment

111 Things to Throw Away to Cut Down on Clutter - Spring Cleaning, Recycling, Upcycling. How to start the process of decluttering your life.

Whether you are spring cleaning, Marie Kondo-ing, or simply looking to free up space, I've got you covered

If you have reached this post, then you are likely looking to declutter your home and your life. How can you start the process of decluttering? Well, you just have to start. I know that may sound overly simplified, but that really is all there is to it. Don't let the process overwhelm you. Start one room at a time. If that still feels overwhelming, then start with one drawer at a time. Commit to working on it a little each day, even if you only have 10 minutes to spare. I am a firm believer that physical clutter equates to mental clutter. I think that once you begin purging the clutter from your home,  you will find that you feel a little lighter and a lot happier. It is so freeing to let go of "things". After all, it is people that matter the most, not things.

If the answer is "NO", let it go!

We all get that familiar itch at the changing of the seasons that tells us it is time to purge. Purge the unwanted, unnecessary  items from our home. Often times, our social circle could use a cleansing as well. For me, this feeling always comes at the close of a year, as I look forward to the possibilities of a new year. Call it my end of year cleansing, if you will. Part of my tradition as I bid farewell to the current year and welcome the incoming year is to take stock of the people and things in my life. Do they bring me joy? Do they add value to my life? Are they are source of positivity? If the answer to any of these are "NO", then they have to go.

If you need some ideas of where to start, I have compiled this list of 111 Things to Throw Away to Cut Down on Clutter. I hope it helps. Anything you would like to add to the list? I would love to hear it in the comments.

Here is another post that might help you along on you mission to live an uncluttered life - How to Free Your Life of Unwanted Clutter.

Please note: Some of these items may need special disposal and should not end up in landfills. See the guidelines in your area for disposing of potentially hazardous waste. While you are at it, here is a list of 40 Ways to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint. We only have one planet. We need to take care of it!
