Quick and Easy DIY Photography Boards | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

    What you will need:

    • Foam Board (I get it at Walmart or Office Depot) You can also get them online here
    • Scraper Tool (I used my kitchen scraper.) You can grab one here
    • Self adhesive Film Rolls (Below are links to the color options featured in the photo below (left to right), as well as a couple of others that I have made since the time of this tutorial.
      • White Grey Marble
      • Weathered Wood
      • White Ash
      • Grey Wood
      • Black Wood Grain
      • Vintage Wood Panel
      • Walnut Brown Wood
      • White Wood Panel
      • Beach Wood
      • Vintage Herb Wood Panel
      • Cypress Antique White

Quick and Easy DIY Photography Boards | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

    What you will will do:

    • Peel back the corner of the self adhesive contact paper and line it up with the corner of the foam board
    • Peel back the top 1 inch of the contact paper roll, separating it from the backing and line it straight along the top edge of the foam board
    • Use the scraper tool to smooth out any bubbles.
    • Slowly pull the down the paper backing of the adhesive roll inch by inch, while simultaneously using the scraper tool to smooth out any creases or bubbles. Continue doing this until you have reached the bottom of the foam board.
    • Use scissors or a box knife to cut the contact paper at the bottom. Fold any excess around the edges and onto the back.
    • Use the scraper tool to go over the whole board and smooth out any imperfections.
    • You're done! How easy was that?

Quick and Easy DIY Photography Boards | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

Below is an example of what the finished product will look like. If your foam board is wider that the roll of contact paper, repeat the process, lining up the patterns of the paper at the seams for continuity to cover the rest of the board. You can even make them reversible and cover the back side with a different print.

Quick and Easy DIY Photography Boards | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

You will have plenty of extra contact paper leftover for future projects or to make more photography boards. These are also great for other DIY projects - Repurposing old furniture, backsplash, lining drawers, shelves and cupboards, refreshing your hoe decor, etc. These rolls are waterproof and can be applied to any flat surface. If you spill on them, clean up is a cinch. Just wipe the mess away with a damp cloth.

Quick and Easy DIY Photography Boards | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

Just like that, in less than an hour, you can have multiple inexpensive and easy DIY photography boards and backdrops. The sky is the limit with the different styles, textures and colors you can use. It will look like you are shooting on real wood and marble surfaces. No one would ever know that it is contact paper on foam board. Not to mention this little Do-It-Yourself project will save you a ton of money. Everyone loves saving money!

Now you can see each of them in action in different settings and with different photography subjects. Below is a recipe that I was shooting for one of my cookbooks. Oven Roasted Cabbage Wedges with Bacon Dijon Vinaigrette. This recipe was shot on the White Ash board. You can get that pattern here.

These are some of my safer skincare products from Beautycounter shot on the White Grey Marble board. Doesn't it look so clean and amazing? I think this might be my favorite one. If this was not my photo, I would never know that this photo wasn't shot on a marble counter top. You can get that pattern here. Shameless promotion here... If you are interested in learning to clean up your makeup and skincare routine, I would love to help you do that. You can read about safer skincare choices here.

These are stationary and scrapbooking supplies shot on the Weathered Wood board. I love how real the wood grain looks. Especially the knots and cracks towards the bottom. The potentials uses are endless! You can get that pattern here.

Quick and Easy DIY Photography Boards | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

Isn't food so naturally beautiful? I could photograph food all day. I have the best job in the world! The food is shot on the Black Wood Grain board. It gives the photo sort of a moody feel but still looks clean and fresh. Get that pattern here.

Quick and Easy DIY Photography Boards | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

Last, but certainly not least! These essential oils are shot on the Grey Wood board. I love the simplicity of this board. Almost everything looks good on it. It also makes a great backdrop blurred in the background of your photo. I might actually use this board as a backdrop more than I do a photo board. Either way, it looks great for both! Get that pattern here.

Quick and Easy DIY Photography Board | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

There you have it - quick, easy and inexpensive DIY photography boards and photo backdrops. Why spend nearly $200 on a bulky wood photography board, when you can make multiple for half of the price? Do you have a DIY project you would like to see? Let me know in the comments!

30 Fathead Cheese Dough Recipes - Low Carb, Gluten Free

May 22, 2016 By Kyndra Holley 22 Comments

12 square images of fathead cheese dough recipes, stacked with a light teal banner in the center.

Fathead dough is a great option for low carb bagels, keto pizza, and more. Here are 30 Fathead Cheese Dough Recipes for every carby craving.

12 square images of fathead cheese dough recipes, stacked with a light teal banner in the center.

Why I love Fathead Cheese Dough Recipes

Ohhhh the infamous fathead dough. It rolled (pun intended) on the scene, seemingly out of nowhere and changed the way low carbers ate forever. I initially saw it for the first time on the Fathead Movie website. From there, I put my own spin on things (as did every other low carb blogger) and I just ran with it.

The list of things I could make with some variation of the dough seemed endless - sweet and savory, nut free, egg free... So many different variations. It truly did put so many comfort foods back on the table again. Low carb and gluten free pizza, cinnamon rolls, pot pie, danishes, bagel dogs... You name it, and we have recreated low-carbified it.

With so many amazing fathead / cheese dough recipes floating around out there, I decided it would be a good idea to compile them all in one place. So, here are 30 of the most deliciously mouthwatering recipes I could find.

5 low carb everything bagels stacked with an additional bagel on the left side of the pile, leaning on the stack. A bit of seasons are sprinkled on the marble countertop, with a white tile patterned background.

At the center of the photo sits a golden brown keto soft pretzel with a small white square sauce dish full of mustard.

Pizza, pizza pizza! What more do I need to say? Pizza is just one of those foods that always sounds good. Who's with me? When I first switched to a low carb, gluten free lifestyle, I set out on a mission to recreate all of my favorite comfort foods into a low carb version. Pizza was close to the top of that list. Since that time, I have created several different low carb pizza variations.  I am a firm believer that a low carb lifestyle does not have to mean depriving yourself of the things that you love. It simply means getting a little creative and thinking outside of the box. I hope you enjoy these as much as we have!!

    A note about this recipe:

    • It is imperative to the recipe that you use a low-moisture, part skim shredded mozzarella cheese. Switching out the cheese will make these fall flat when baking.
    • You may have better results if you freeze the roll up for an hour or 2 before slicing.
    • Larger shreds work better and tend to be dryer. They really help make a better “dough” consistency.
    • If you are worried about these rolls spreading out and flattening, try baking them in a muffin tin. Even better, use a silicone muffin pan and cut your clean up the in half.

20 Delicious & Creative Brussels Sprouts Recipes

April 20, 2016 By Kyndra Holley Leave a Comment

20 Delicious and Creative Brussels Sprouts Recipes | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

20 Delicious and Creative Brussels Sprouts Recipes | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

    1. They’re in a family

Brussels sprouts look like baby cabbages not because they are baby cabbages, but because they’re part of the same family. With cabbages, we eat the head that grows out of the ground. Brussels sprouts, on the other hand, are buds that grow along the length of a thick, fibrous stalk.

    2. They’re named for Belgians

If you’ve ever wondered why they’re called Brussels sprouts, the answer has been right in front of you the whole time: they’re from Brussels, silly. Well, sort of. While early versions of the vegetable are said to date back to ancient Rome, modern-day Brussels sprouts were embraced and widely cultivated in Belgium as early as the 16th century.

    3. They’re medicinal

Originally, Brussels sprouts are said to be bred from wild cabbages found in Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan. In Chinese medicine, they are prescribed to improve digestive health.

    4. They’ve got mad haters

A 2008 survey conducted by Heinz revealed that Brussels sprouts are the most-hated vegetable in America. A similar poll in Britain found the vilified vegetables at the top of the most-hated list there, too. And yet, Brits grow about six times more of the baby cabbages than we do in the U.S.

    5. They’re stinky for a reason

So many people hate Brussels sprouts because of the memory of stinky smells emanating from mom’s kitchen way back when. But why do Brussels sprouts smell? Well, first of all, they tend to only get really stinky when overcooked – especially when boiled. The smell is associated with glucosinolate sinigrin, an organic compound that contains sulfur: hence the odor. It also happens to be responsible for the cancer-fighting characteristics of Brussels sprouts.

    6. They grow in your own backyard

In the U.S., the majority of commercial Brussels sprout production occurs in California. But if you shop at your local farmer’s market, you know that the buds can be grown just about anywhere – even in the chilliest parts of the country. So, seek out local ones!

    7. The stalks are awesome

Brussels sprouts are often cheaper if you buy them on the stalk because of the labor involved with plucking the buds off. They also last significantly longer on the stalk than loose when kept in the fridge. Plus, they look so much cooler that way.

    8. Seriously, they’re good for you. Like, really good

Brussels sprouts are an excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin C (way more than an orange, by the way), vitamin K, as well as beta carotene, folic acid, iron, magnesium and fiber. They’re also high in selenium, which is associated with reduced risks of certain cancers, as well as increased male virility.

    9. They’re also dangerous

Brussels sprouts can have undesirable side effects for anyone on anticoagulant medication. A man in Scotland was hospitalized last year for eating too many of the cruciferous vegetables, which are high in blood clot-promoting vitamin K, after they counteracted the effects of his medication.

    10. More on Brussels sprouts overdoses…

Linus Urbanec of Sweden holds the Guinness World Record for most Brussels sprouts eaten in one minute. That number is 31 and the record was set in 2008.

    11. There's a Brussels sprout "breed" out there for you

Dozens of varieties of Brussels sprouts exist today. They come in all sizes, from marble-sized button buds to golf ball-sized ones. Popular breeds include Bubbles, Prince Marvel and Oliver.

    7 Uses For Broccoli Stalks

January 25, 2016 By Kyndra Holley 2 Comments

7 Uses for Broccoli Stalks | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

    7 Uses for Broccoli Stalks

I love broccoli... Love, love, love it.  I could eat it every day and never get tired of it. Are you making good use of the entire broccoli, stems and stalks? Don't toss those precious stalks in the trash. There are so many great ways to use them. Here are just a few of those uses. I've thrown in a few creative broccoli stalk recipes for you as well!

    • Toss them in a frittata - beef up the fiber in your breakfast, while adding some beneficial vitamins and minerals. Use a box grater to shred the stalk and throw them in your favorite frittata recipe.

    • Compost them - If you are a gardener or do any kind of farming, composting is a great way to turn your unwanted food scraps into fertilizer. Waste not, want not! Use your food to help grow more food. Sustainability at it's finest. Composting can be really clean and easy with a portable compost tumbler.

    • Pickle them - for a quick and easy, healthy snack, you can cut the stalk into matchstick pieces and do a quick pickle.

    • Use them for vegetable stock - Throw them in a slow cooker, along with some water, carrots, onions, celery, garlic, thyme, parsley, salt and pepper etc. and simmer to reduce down to a nice healthy vegetable stock.

    • Purée them - Shred the stalks, boil or roast them, and then puree them and add them to a delicious marinara sauce. This is a great way to sneak some extra vegetables into your children's diets.

    • Spiral slice them to make noodles - Use a spiral slicer to make your own broccoli stalk noodles. You can also use a box grater or food processor to shred them and toss them in a coleslaw.

    • Use them in a stir-fry - Broccoli stalks have a pretty mild flavor, but they hold their shape and keep a nice crunch. Try using them in a stir-fry or cutting them into chunks and roasting them in the oven as a quick side dish.

20 Alternatives to Traditional Holiday Gift Giving | Kyndra Holley

Do the holidays stress you out? Me too. The last minute struggle to beat the crowds and find a gift that won't end up in someone else's regift pile is stressful. Not to mention the financial strain that it causes.

Shopping on Christmas eve? Does this sound like you? Why? What is it all for? Giving and receiving gifts is wonderful, but spending quality time with loved ones is priceless.

What if there was another way to celebrate the holidays? What about alternative options to gift buying. Have you ever had a "Buy Nothing Christmas" or a "DIY Christmas"? Homemade gifts are an excellent way to show someone near and dear to you that you love them, but it allows you to disengage from the consumer attitudes that have come to dominate our holiday season. Christmas has really lost its spirit and true meaning. Most consumer holidays have. As consumers we blindly follow the societal standards for holidays and usually end up breaking the bank, doing more harm than good. I am a woman and I hate Valentines day. Yes, you heard that right. I hate Valentines day. It isn't because I am single and bitter. It isn't because no one ever gave me candy or roses. Quite the opposite... I am happily married to the man of my dreams. He shows me how much he loves me 365 days a year. I don't need him to buy me flowers that cost 3 times more than normal flowers because a made up holiday says he should. We have a "No Valentines Day" pact in our home. However, we do usually spend that day together, free of distraction and make sure that we set aside some quality time together in a sea of hectic days. My views on Christmas have come to be the same. I love the chilly winter days with the fireplace roaring, Christmas decorations as far as the eye can see, a tree in the corner of the room that has years worth of memories hanging from it, delicious, bountiful meals and quality time with family. I just don't think that has to include exchanging gifts that none of us really need or want. I know, I know... you are going to say "What about the children?"  I say, teach them early about the importance of family togetherness, the spirit giving back, and the true heart of what Christmas means. For the last two years we got each of our kids 4 gifts only - Something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read. For everyone else in our life, we do a mixture of the things below, or simply do not exchange gifts. Instead we exchange hugs, stories, memories, meals together etc. Do you have a fun alternative to holiday gift giving? We would love to hear it.

    1.  Have an abundance swap. Give away one nice item that you have but really do not need

    2.  DIY gift exchange using only items you have around the house or with a set $ amount

    3.  Host a homemade food swap and have a big potluck

    4.  Share an experience or plan a group outing together

    5.  Donate to a charity on a loved ones behalf

    6.  Adopt a family in need for the holidays

    7.  Send a care package to a soldier

    8.  Visit a local nursing home and spend time with those who don't have family

    9.  Have a Re-gift swap. We all have those random gifts floating around collecting dust in their packages.

    10. Make a custom coupon book

    11. Gift a magazine subscription

    12.  Donate the gift of your time

    13.  Get creative at a second hand store

    14. For Spouses - Instead of getting each other gifts, combine the money you would have spent and get something you both have really been wanting for the house that they whole family can enjoy.

    15.  Spend the day as a family delivering meals to seniors

    16.  Start a holiday memories journal that the whole family writes in on Christmas

    17.  Host a holiday movie marathon

    18.  Have a "cleaning out the closets" clothing exchange

    19.  Go caroling as a family

    20.  Deliver cookies to people who have to spend the holiday working

10 Reasons You Should Be Using Cast Iron Cookware and 10 Skillet Recipes

April 24, 2015 By Kyndra Holley Leave a Comment

10 Reasons You Should Be Using Cast Iron Cookware and 10 Skillet Recipes | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

10 Reasons You Should Be Using Cast Iron Cookware and 10 Skillet Recipes | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

Cooks seeking alternatives to toxic non-stick cookware often find themselves in a bind. Stainless steel, which seems to be the healthiest alternative, is expensive, and it does not lend itself well to cooking eggs, pancakes and other dishes that non-stick cookware typically excels at. If you have not yet discovered the benefits of cast iron cooking, here are 10 reasons to buy and use a cast iron skillet.

    1. Avoid Toxic Fumes

Replacing a non-stick skillet with a cast iron one allows you to avoid the toxic fumes that accompany most non-stick cookware. Cast iron can also replace aluminum cookware, which may also pose health hazards.

    2. Use in oven

Besides the stove, you can use a cast iron skillet in the oven, at any temperature. This comes in handy for making corn bread, frittatas, and flat bread.

    3. Nonstick

Surprisingly, a preheated cast iron skillet rivals the qualities of non-stick cookware, as long as it is properly seasoned and cared for. You can quickly move up this short learning curve by talking with employees at your local cookware store or by reading a book or Internet article about cast iron care.

    4. Easy Clean up

Cast iron is easy to clean up. Not only does food easily lift off from cast iron cookware, soap is not needed or recommended, since it erodes the seasoning.

    5. Health Benefits

You can actually boost your iron intake from eating food cooked in cast iron cookware. This vital mineral is crucial for maintaining energy levels, and it helps strengthen immune systems.

    6. Inexpensive

Cooks looking to replace non-stick cookware often investigate stainless steel. However, a high-end, 12-inch stainless skillet runs well over $100, while a similar-sized cast iron one costs less than $30.

    7. Food cooks beautifully.

Using a cast iron skillet you can create restaurant-quality, homemade fish sticks, potato pancakes and French toast, complete with golden brown, crispy exteriors. Contrast this with non-stick cookware, which makes browning nearly impossible.

    8. Sturdy/Wears well10 Reasons You Should Be Using Cast Iron Cookware and 10 Skillet Recipes | Healthy Living in Body and Mind

Since it does not scratch, there is no need to use plastic utensils, and there is no fear of using your silverware to stir or scoop. It lasts for so long that many people still use cast iron cookware inherited from their parents and grandparents.

    9. Any heat source can be used

In an emergency, cast iron cookware can be used over any heat source. As such, many disaster planning lists include cast iron as the survival cookware of choice.

    10. Proven over years

It has been used for thousands of years. Natural News readers already understand how new technologies are often the least healthy, while those used by earlier generations are often more beneficial and more in line with how we are designed. Our cookware choice is no exception.

Here are some delicious ideas of the types of recipes you can cook in your cast iron skillet.

12 Little Habits That May Have Stole Your Happiness Last Year

January 8, 2015 By Kyndra Holley Leave a Comment

    bigstock-Happy-birthday-woman-against-t-50917193

Are you tired of dealing with the same type of headaches and heartaches over and over and over again? Seriously, it’s time to purge some bad habits as we begin a New Year.  It’s time to learn from your mistakes rather than be conquered by them, and let your errors be of commission rather than omission.

Remember, you ultimately become what you repeatedly do.  If your habits aren’t helping you, they’re hurting you.  Here are 12 common examples of the latter that stole happiness from hundreds of our coaching clients last year:

Sticking exclusively with what you already know.

When you stop learning you stop living a meaningful life.  This is the truth.  Life’s richness does not come from always residing within familiar and comfortable territory.  It’s when you venture out, away from the familiar, that you grow stronger and more capable.  You must hold tightly to your core values while at the same time opening your heart and mind to new ideas, feelings and experiences.  Your own perspective will become clearer when you look at things from different angles.  Find ways to provide a healthy challenge to your current understanding of life, and you will discover and experience far more of life’s magic in the year ahead.

Resisting life’s inevitable and necessary changes.

There will always be more tough changes to make.  Always!  And yes, this growth can be painful.  Change can be painful.  But in the end, nothing is as painful as staying stuck somewhere you do not belong.  You’re not the same person you were a year ago, a month ago or a week ago.  You’re always growing.  Experiences don’t stop.  That’s life.  It takes a great deal of courage to admit that something needs to change, and a lot more courage, still, to accept responsibility for making the change happen.  But doing so is worth every bit of effort you can muster.

Letting others define what’s possible for you and your life.

Some people will kill you over time if you let them; and how they’ll kill you is with tiny, seemingly harmless phrases like, “Be realistic.”  When this happens, close your ears and listen to your inner voice instead.  Remember that real success in life isn’t what others see, but how you feel inside.  It’s living your truth and doing what makes you feel alive.  There will come a time when your back is up against the wall and you’ll realize all you can do is say, “I’m sorry, I’m doing things my way this time!”  That’s the earth-shattering moment you stop planning for someone else’s expectations and start making progress on what’s truly important to YOU.  That’s when you begin to live life according to your own morals and values.  And that’s when you can finally be happy and free.

Focusing on everyone’s story except your own.

Don’t be so satisfied with the success stories of others and how things have gone for them that you forget to write your own.  And don’t compare your Chapter 1 to someone else’s Chapter 15.  Unfold your own tale and bring it to life.  You have everything you need to become what you are capable of becoming.  Incredible change happens when you decide to take control.  This means consuming less and creating more.  It means refusing to let others do your thinking, talking and deciding for you.  It means learning to respect and use your own ideas and instincts to write your passage.  If you want your life story to soar to new heights this year, you’ve got to clear a path, reduce the time-sinks and burdens weighing you down, and pick up the things that give you wings.  Keep your best wishes and your biggest goals close to your heart and dedicate time to them every day.

    Focusing on every little problem.

The greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our attitudes, not our circumstances.  If you’re stressed out by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your interpretation of it; and this is something you have the power to change at any moment.  In other words, frustration and stress come from the way you react, not the way things are.  Adjust your attitude, and the frustration and stress is gone.  (Read The How of Happiness.)

Wanting to be more right than everyone else.

When it’s suddenly more important to win arguments than to love people, we need to start all over again with our priorities.  Remember, truly confident people don’t mind being proven wrong.  They know that finding out what is right is a lot more important than being right.  And when they’re wrong, they’re secure enough to back down graciously and appreciate the lesson learned.  In fact, sometimes we must choose to be wrong, not because we really are wrong, but because we value our relationship more than our pride.  When two people who care about each other fight, both are wrong.  They have put some kind of superficial outcome over love and compromise.  The one who apologizes and makes up first is the one who is right.

Holding on to someone who continuously and deliberately hurts you.

Sometimes you have to walk away from people, not because you don’t care, but because they don’t.  Forgiveness is important, but when someone hurts you time and time again, purposely, you have to accept the fact that they don’t care about you.  It’s a tough pill to swallow, but it’s necessary medicine.  Do NOT strive to impress them anymore.  Waste not another second of your time trying to prove something to them.  Nothing needs to be proven.  Do not act with any thought of them for the foreseeable future.  Create space for yourself and dedicate your time and energy to rediscovering your happiness and peace of mind.

Being more loving to others than you are to yourself.

Life gets a lot easier when you are your own best friend.  So don’t forget about YOU out there, and don’t be too hard on yourself either.  There are plenty of others that will do both of these things for you.  There’s absolutely nothing selfish about self-care.  If you don’t take good care of yourself then you can’t take good care of anyone else.  Because we can’t give what we don’t have.  Treat yourself right and you’ll be life-giving to others.  And know that there’s a big difference between self-care and…

    Being too self-absorbed.

Generosity is what keeps the things you own from owning you.  In other words, generosity isn’t just to help others, it’s also to liberate you.  Which is why you cannot live abundantly until you have done something nice for someone who can never repay you.  Know this and live graciously.  There is no exercise better for your heart and mind than reaching down and lifting people up.

Expecting everyone else to be as kind and caring as you are.

Bottom line: You will end up very disappointed if you expect people will always do for you as you do for them.  Not everyone has the same heart as you.  (Read Loving What Is.)

    Expecting to never lose anything.

It’s incredibly tough to comprehend at times, but there’s a reason for everything.  We must know the pain of loss, because if we never knew it, we would have little compassion for others and we would become bigheaded monsters of egoism – creatures of sheer self-interest, never being happy with what we have.  The awful pain of loss teaches humility to our prideful kind, has the power to warm-up a cold heart, and make an even better person out of a good one.  So remember that no book is just one chapter.  No chapter tells the whole story.  No hardship defines who you are.  Keep turning the pages that need to be turned.

    Letting yesterday’s displeasures defeat you.

Don’t live with disappointment, live beyond it.  You cannot stop what has already happened, but you can let it make you stronger and more determined.  The journey to emotional maturity requires that you review the events in your life to find the wisdom and purpose they contain.  And a time will inevitably come in your life when you finally get it.  When in the midst of all your hesitation and frustration you stop dead in your tracks and somewhere the voice inside your head cries out, “ENOUGH!”  This is the turning point that ultimately leads to healing and growth.  So as we begin a new year, close the door on your past, open the door to your future, take a deep breath, take a step forward, and start a new chapter in your life.
